How to Grow Spinach, Coriander & Methi at Home in Pakistan

by Javed Iqbal, TI (M) 06 Oct 2026

Spinach, coriander and methi are three of the easiest and most useful winter leafy greens to grow at home in Pakistan. They are fast, productive, suitable for containers and can be harvested repeatedly when managed well. For Lahore and similar plains, autumn through winter is the easiest growing period.

Why These Three Crops Are Ideal for Beginners

All three are direct-sown, relatively quick and do not require a nursery stage. They also fit well into pots, trays, raised beds and wide grow bags. Succession sowing every 10–15 days can provide a more continuous harvest.

How to Grow Spinach at Home

Spinach prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Sow directly in rows or broadcast thinly, then cover lightly. Thin crowded seedlings so leaves can expand and airflow remains good.

Spinach Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist. Repeated drying can make growth slow, while waterlogging encourages root problems. In winter, always check moisture before watering again.

Spinach Harvesting

Begin harvesting outer leaves when plants are well established. Leave the central growing point intact if you want repeated cuts. For a traditional local option, also browse Lahori Palak Seeds.

How to Grow Coriander at Home

Coriander grows best from direct sowing. Lightly crush or split the seed clusters before sowing if desired, then plant shallowly in moist, loose soil. Avoid excessive heat because coriander can bolt quickly when temperatures rise.

Coriander Spacing and Harvest

For leaf production, plants can be grown fairly close together. Harvest young leaves with scissors, leaving enough growth for regrowth. For a fuller leaf type, see Coriander Broad Leaf F1 Hybrid Seeds.

How to Grow Methi at Home

Methi is one of the quickest winter greens. Sow seeds directly and fairly densely in rows or a broad bed. Cover lightly, keep moist and thin only if plants become excessively crowded.

Methi Harvesting

Young plants can be harvested as a tender leafy crop, or allowed to grow larger for repeated cutting depending on the variety. GREEN GARDENS Fenugreek / Methi Seeds are suitable for home winter planting.

Best Grow Bags for Leafy Greens

Leafy vegetables benefit more from surface area than extreme depth. Individual plants can be grown in G-11 or G-12 bags, while the wide G-24 Green Grow Bag is especially useful for a broad bed of spinach, coriander or methi. Larger G-36 and G-45 raised-bed styles are useful for bigger rooftop plantings.

Soil Mix

Use a loose mix with good garden soil, mature Vermicompost and, where needed, Cocopeat to improve moisture balance and texture. Avoid fresh manure or very strong fertilizer close to young seedlings.

Sunlight

These crops perform best with several hours of direct sun. In a home garden, aim for about 4–6 hours for good leaf production, with more light generally producing sturdier growth in cool weather.

Common Problems

  • Poor germination: often caused by dry seed beds, excessive depth or unsuitable temperature.
  • Yellowing: may come from waterlogging, nutrient imbalance or very dense planting.
  • Aphids: inspect tender new growth regularly.
  • Slow growth: often linked to insufficient light, compact soil or cold/wet roots.
  • Early bolting: especially common in coriander as temperatures rise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can spinach, coriander and methi be grown together?

Yes, but separate rows or sections make watering, thinning and harvesting easier because each crop grows at a slightly different speed.

Do these crops need a nursery tray?

No. All three are normally easiest when direct sown into the final bed, pot or grow bag.

How soon can I start harvesting?

Methi is often the quickest. Spinach and coriander follow as plants develop enough leaf mass. Exact timing depends on temperature, variety and growing conditions.

Can I grow them on a balcony?

Yes, provided the balcony receives enough light and the containers have good drainage.
