Keep the soil moderately moist while ensuring good drainage.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

1. Prepare the Seeds

Coriander “seeds” are actually dry fruits that usually contain more than one seed.

For improved and more even germination, gently split the coriander fruits into halves before sowing.

Do not crush them into powder.

2. Direct Sowing

Coriander is best direct sown in the final pot, grow bag or garden bed because it develops a taproot and generally does not benefit from unnecessary transplanting.

Sow approximately:

1–1.5 cm deep

Cover lightly with fine soil.

3. Germination

Keep the soil evenly moist.

Seeds generally germinate within:

7–14 days

under suitable conditions.

4. Light Requirements

Provide approximately:

4–6+ hours of sunlight daily

During warmer weather, protection from intense afternoon heat may help keep plants leafy for longer.

5. Thinning & Spacing

Once seedlings establish, thin overcrowded plants.

For leaf production, maintain approximately:

5–10 cm spacing

Closer planting can be used when coriander is grown mainly for young leaves.

6. Watering & Feeding

Water regularly enough to maintain moderate soil moisture without waterlogging.

Before sowing, incorporate GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost 🔗 into the soil.

Avoid excessive nitrogen feeding.

7. Preventing Early Bolting

High temperatures, dry soil and plant stress can encourage coriander to flower prematurely.

To maintain leafy growth for longer:

  • Keep soil moisture reasonably consistent
  • Avoid excessive heat where possible
  • Harvest regularly
  • Sow small batches at intervals for continued supply

8. Harvesting

Begin harvesting once plants have developed sufficient healthy foliage.

Cut outer leaves and stems while allowing the centre to continue growing.

For larger harvests, cut plants a few centimeters above soil level while young and tender.

Successive sowing every few weeks can provide a more continuous supply of fresh coriander.

9. Growing for Seeds

If coriander seeds are required, allow selected healthy plants to flower and form seed heads.

Wait until the seed heads become dry and brown before harvesting.

Dry thoroughly before storage.
