How to Grow Peas in Pakistan – Complete November to December Guide

by Javed Iqbal, TI (M) 06 Oct 2026

Peas are one of the most rewarding winter vegetables for home gardeners in Pakistan. In Lahore and much of the hot plains, the strongest sowing window is generally from November to around mid-December, when temperatures are cool enough for healthy vegetative growth, flowering and pod formation.

Best Time to Sow Peas in Pakistan

Peas prefer cool weather. In Lahore, Faisalabad and similar plains, November is usually an excellent month to sow. Sowing can continue into December, but very late sowing may reduce yield because flowering and pod development can overlap with rising spring temperatures.

Direct Sowing Is Best

Peas are best sown directly where they will grow. Their roots establish quickly and do not need a nursery stage. Sow seeds in prepared soil or the final grow bag and give support soon after seedlings begin climbing.

How to Sow Pea Seeds

  1. Prepare loose, fertile, well-drained soil.
  2. Water the soil lightly before sowing if it is very dry.
  3. Sow seeds about 2.5–4 cm deep, depending on soil texture.
  4. Space plants roughly 5–8 cm apart in rows.
  5. Keep the seed zone evenly moist until emergence.
  6. Install a trellis early so tendrils can attach naturally.

Best Soil for Peas

Peas perform well in a loose loam enriched with mature organic matter. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil. A practical container mix can include good garden soil, screened Vermicompost and a lightening material such as Cocopeat. Do not overfeed with nitrogen because peas can produce excessive leaves at the expense of flowers and pods.

Growing Peas in GREEN GARDENS Grow Bags

A wide container is ideal because several pea plants can be grown in one row with a support system. The G-24 Green 24×12 Inch Grow Bag provides broad planting area and works very well for peas. It can be positioned beside a wall, railing or free-standing trellis.

Why Peas Need a Trellis

Most garden peas climb by tendrils. Without support, vines collapse over one another, reducing airflow and making harvesting difficult. Bamboo stakes, wire mesh, string or crop support netting can all work.

Watering Pea Plants

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and pod filling. Do not keep the root zone permanently wet. In cool weather, water demand is lower than in summer, so check the soil before irrigating again.

Sunlight and Position

Peas prefer a bright, sunny position. Aim for at least 5–6 hours of direct sun where possible. Rooftops and balconies can work well if the vines are protected from severe wind and the trellis is securely fixed.

Flowering and Pod Formation

Healthy vines begin producing white flowers followed by pods. Avoid water stress at this stage. Harvest pods regularly when they are full but still tender; frequent picking encourages continued production.

Common Problems in Peas

  • Poor germination: often linked to warm soil, overwatering, deep sowing or old seed.
  • Yellow leaves: may result from waterlogging, nutrient imbalance or root problems.
  • Aphids: inspect young shoots and flowers regularly.
  • Powdery mildew: more common when airflow is poor and the crop remains too long into warming weather.
  • Weak vines: can result from insufficient sunlight or lack of support.

Harvesting Peas

Pick pods when they are plump, bright green and still tender. Do not wait until pods become dry and fibrous unless you are intentionally saving mature seed. Harvest every few days during peak production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to sow peas in Lahore?

November is excellent, with sowing usually continuing through the first half of December in the hot plains.

Can peas be grown in a grow bag?

Yes. Wide bags such as G-24 are very suitable because they provide space for several plants and a trellis.

Do peas need fertilizer?

They need fertile soil but usually do not require heavy nitrogen feeding. Balanced organic matter and good soil structure are more important than excessive fertilizer.

How much sun do peas need?

At least 5–6 hours of direct sun is a useful target for good flowering and pod production.
