Grow fresh and flavourful Leeks (سبز پیاز) at home from high-quality seeds. Leek is a cool-season vegetable known for its long white stems, mild onion-like flavour, and attractive blue-green leaves. It is widely used in soups, stews, salads, stir-fries, sauces, and many other recipes.

Leeks grow well in garden beds, raised beds, pots, and grow bags. With regular watering, fertile soil, and proper sunlight, the plants develop thick, tender stems that can be harvested over an extended period.

The best sowing time in Pakistan is September and October, when temperatures become suitable for healthy germination and steady plant growth.

Growing Instructions

1. Sowing Season in Pakistan

Best sowing months:

September and October

Leeks perform best during the cooler autumn and winter growing season.

2. Soil Preparation

Use soft, fertile, and well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.

Recommended soil mixture:

  • 50% Bhalu mitti or good-quality garden soil

  • 50% vermicompost or well-rotted organic compost

Avoid hard, compacted, or waterlogged soil.

3. Sowing Method

Sow the seeds in seedling trays, small pots, or a prepared nursery bed.

  • Sow seeds approximately ¼ inch deep

  • Cover lightly with fine soil

  • Water gently after sowing

  • Keep the soil consistently moist until germination

4. Germination

Seeds usually germinate within approximately 7–14 days, depending on temperature, seed quality, and soil moisture.

Keep the nursery area bright but protected from harsh afternoon sunlight during early germination.

5. Transplanting

Transplant seedlings when they are approximately 4–6 inches tall and strong enough to handle.

Plant seedlings slightly deeper than they were growing in the nursery. Deeper planting helps produce a longer white stem.

6. Plant Spacing

Maintain approximately:

  • 4–6 inches between plants

  • 10–12 inches between rows

For grow bags, avoid overcrowding and provide sufficient space for stem development.

7. Sunlight

Provide at least 5–7 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Morning sunlight is especially beneficial for healthy growth.

8. Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry. Regular watering is important for producing tender and healthy stems.

9. Fertilizer and Care

Apply vermicompost or well-rotted compost every 3–4 weeks.

Lightly add soil around the lower stem as the plant grows. This process helps increase the length of the tender white portion.

Keep the planting area free from weeds and maintain good airflow around the plants.

10. Harvesting

Leeks are generally ready for harvesting when the stems become firm and reach a suitable thickness.

Harvest the entire plant by gently loosening the surrounding soil and pulling it out carefully. Younger leeks can also be harvested early for a milder taste.
