Kohlrabi is a member of the cabbage family grown mainly for its distinctive swollen stem that develops just above the soil surface.

The edible bulb-like stem is crisp and juicy when harvested young and has a mild flavour somewhere between cabbage and turnip.

The leaves are also edible and can be cooked like other leafy brassicas.

Exact stem colour, shape, size and maturity may vary according to the seed strain.

G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch 🔗

Recommended Soil / Potting Mix

Use fertile, loose and well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

A practical GREEN GARDENS mix can be:

50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil) + 50% Vermicompost 🔗

Maintain consistent moisture for tender stem development, but avoid waterlogging.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

1. Sowing

Sow seeds approximately:

0.5–1 cm deep

Cover lightly with fine soil.

Seeds can be started in nursery trays or sown directly in the final bed or container.

2. Germination

Keep the growing medium evenly moist.

Seeds generally germinate within:

5–10 days

under suitable cool to mild conditions.

3. Light Requirements

Provide approximately:

5–6+ hours of sunlight daily

Good sunlight supports compact plant growth and proper stem development.

4. Thinning & Transplanting

Thin overcrowded seedlings after true leaves develop.

If started in trays, transplant when seedlings have several true leaves and are strong enough to handle.

5. Plant Spacing

Maintain approximately:

15–25 cm between plants

Adequate spacing allows the swollen stem to develop properly.

6. Watering & Feeding

Keep soil moisture reasonably consistent.

Dry conditions may make the edible stem tougher, while excessive watering can cause root problems.

Incorporate GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost 🔗 before planting and provide moderate nutrition during active growth.

7. Stem Development

The edible swollen stem forms above the soil surface.

Do not bury or mound soil around the developing bulb-like stem.

Maintain good spacing and even moisture as it enlarges.

8. General Care

Keep the growing area free from excessive weeds.

Monitor for common brassica pests such as:

  • Aphids
  • Caterpillars
  • Cabbage worms
  • Other leaf-feeding insects

Remove badly damaged leaves when necessary.

9. Harvesting

Harvest Kohlrabi while the swollen stem is still young, tender and crisp.

For many varieties, harvesting at approximately:

5–8 cm diameter

provides good eating quality.

Do not allow the stem to become excessively large, as older stems can become fibrous or woody.
