Garlic Chives, botanically known as Allium tuberosum, are perennial herbs grown for their flat, strap-like green leaves and mild garlic flavour.
Unlike common chives, which have hollow tubular leaves and a more onion-like flavour, Garlic Chives produce broader flat leaves with a distinct garlic aroma.
Mature plants may also develop attractive white flower clusters.
Garlic Chives can be used in:
Fresh leaves are generally best added near the end of cooking to retain their flavour.

50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil) + 50% Vermicompost 🔗
Maintain moderate soil moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Sow seeds approximately:
0.5–1 cm deep
Cover lightly with fine soil.
Seeds can be started in trays or sown directly in the final pot, grow bag or garden bed.
Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Seeds generally germinate within:
10–21 days
Garlic Chives may germinate more slowly than many common leafy herbs.
Once established, provide approximately:
4–6+ hours of sunlight daily
Light afternoon protection can be useful during very hot weather.
Thin overcrowded seedlings after true leaves develop.
If started in trays, transplant when seedlings are strong enough to handle.
Plants can also be grouped in small clumps rather than spaced individually.
Maintain approximately:
15–20 cm between clumps
Adequate spacing helps improve airflow and allows each clump to expand.
Water regularly enough to keep the soil moderately moist without waterlogging.
Incorporate GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost 🔗 before planting.
Moderate feeding during active growth can support fresh leaf production.
Begin harvesting once plants are well established and have developed sufficient foliage.
Cut leaves a few centimetres above the soil rather than pulling them out.
Regular cutting encourages fresh new growth.
Avoid removing all foliage from very young plants at once.
Mature Garlic Chives may produce attractive white flower clusters.
Flowers can be left for ornamental value and pollinators, or removed if maximum leaf production is preferred.
Garlic Chives are perennial and can remain productive for multiple seasons under suitable conditions.
Established clumps can gradually become larger and may eventually be divided and replanted if they become overcrowded.
