Foxglove / Digitalis Seeds – Mix | WINTER

Foxglove belongs to the genus Digitalis, with Digitalis purpurea being one of the best-known garden species.

It develops a basal cluster of attractive green leaves followed by tall flowering stems carrying numerous hanging, bell-shaped flowers.

The blooms may appear in:

Pink, purple, white, cream and mixed shades with attractive spotted throats.

Depending on variety and growing conditions, plants may develop flower spikes approximately:

90–150 cm / 3–5 feet tall.

Foxglove is traditionally grown as a biennial or short-lived perennial, although flowering behaviour can vary according to variety, climate and sowing time.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

Foxglove seeds are very small and are best started in:

Seedling trays, shallow containers or carefully prepared nursery beds.

Sprinkle the seeds over the surface of moist growing medium.

Do not bury them deeply.

Instead:

Press the seeds gently onto the surface and provide only a very light covering, if any.

Water carefully using a fine mist or gentle spray.

Keep the growing medium:

Lightly and consistently moist until germination.

Important Sowing Note

Foxglove seeds benefit from:

Light during germination.

Therefore:

Do not cover the seeds deeply with soil.

Gently press the seeds onto the moist surface so they have good contact with the growing medium.

Because the seeds are extremely fine, strong watering can easily displace them.

Use:

Fine misting or very gentle watering.

Germination

Seeds generally germinate within:

10–20 days

under suitable conditions.

Good germination depends on:

• Cool-to-moderate temperatures
• Consistent moisture
• Adequate light
• Correct sowing depth
• Fine, well-draining growing medium
• Seed freshness

Avoid allowing the seed-starting medium to dry completely.

Excessive heat may reduce germination and weaken young seedlings.

Transplanting

When seedlings become established and develop several true leaves:

Transplant carefully into individual pots, grow bags or flower beds.

Avoid damaging the young roots during transplanting.

Seedlings should be gradually exposed to stronger sunlight before being moved permanently outdoors.

Plant Spacing

Maintain approximately:

30–45 cm / 12–18 inches between plants

for home garden cultivation.

Adequate spacing provides:

Better airflow, healthy leaf development and sufficient room for tall flower spikes.

During Pakistan's cool winter weather:

Good morning and daytime sunlight helps plants develop strongly.

In locations where temperatures become warmer:

Water when the upper soil layer begins to dry.

Standing water and continuously saturated soil.
