Fava Beans, also known as Broad Beans, are a cool-season vegetable suitable for kitchen gardens, rooftop gardens, grow bags, large pots, and open soil beds. The plants produce upright green foliage, attractive white flowers with dark markings, and long green pods containing broad, fresh beans.
This vegetable is a good choice for gardeners who want to grow seasonal beans at home during suitable weather. For best results, sow during the recommended season and provide rich, soft, well-draining soil, regular watering, and full sunlight.
Hot Climates:
November to December
Cold Climates like GB, Ziarat, Kashmir:
April to June
Grow Fava Beans in a sunny location with 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. In very hot weather, protect young plants from harsh afternoon heat.
Use rich, soft, and well-draining soil. A good mix is:
50% garden soil + 50% organic matter / vermicompost
Avoid hard, compacted, or waterlogged soil because it can affect root growth.
Sow seeds directly in the final pot, grow bag, or soil bed.
Sowing depth: 1–1.5 inches
Plant spacing: 6–8 inches
Row spacing: 18–24 inches
After sowing, water gently and keep the soil slightly moist until germination.
Seeds usually germinate in suitable cool weather when soil moisture is maintained. Do not overwater during germination.
For container growing, use a 12×12 inch grow bag for a small setup. For better growth and multiple plants, use larger grow bags or soil beds.
Water when the upper layer of soil starts to dry. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Avoid standing water, especially in containers.
Mix compost or vermicompost into the soil before sowing. After plant establishment, apply a balanced organic vegetable fertilizer lightly every 15–20 days if needed.
Fava Bean plants are upright but may need light support in windy areas or when plants become heavy with pods.
Harvest pods when they are well-filled, green, and tender. Regular picking encourages better plant performance during the season.
Avoid sowing in very hot weather.
Do not overwater.
Use well-draining soil.
Provide good sunlight and airflow.
Grow during the recommended season for best results.
