Growing Instructions from Seeds

1. Prepare the Seeds

Coriander “seeds” are technically dry fruits that commonly contain more than one seed.

Gently split the fruits into halves before sowing to help encourage more even germination.

Do not crush them into powder.

2. Direct Sowing

Coriander is best direct sown in the final pot, grow bag or garden bed.

Sow approximately:

1–1.5 cm deep

Cover lightly with fine soil.

3. Germination

Keep the soil evenly moist.

Seeds generally germinate within:

7–14 days

at suitable temperatures.

4. Sunlight

Provide approximately:

4–6+ hours of sunlight daily

During warmer weather, some afternoon shade can help maintain tender leafy growth for longer.

5. Thinning & Spacing

Thin overcrowded seedlings after establishment.

For fresh leaf production, maintain approximately:

5–10 cm spacing

Closer planting can be used when growing primarily for young leaves.

6. Watering & Feeding

Maintain regular soil moisture without waterlogging.

Incorporate GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost 🔗 before sowing.

Avoid excessive nitrogen feeding.

7. Successive Sowing

For a continuous supply of fresh coriander, sow smaller batches approximately every:

2–3 weeks

This is especially useful for regular household harvesting.

8. Preventing Early Bolting

High temperatures, dry soil and other plant stresses can encourage early flowering.

To maintain leafy growth:

  • Keep soil moisture consistent
  • Protect from excessive heat where possible
  • Harvest regularly
  • Use successive sowing

9. Harvesting

Begin harvesting once plants have developed sufficient healthy foliage.

Cut leaves and tender stems as required while leaving younger central growth where possible.

For larger harvests, young plants may be cut a few centimetres above soil level.

10. Growing for Seeds

Allow selected plants to flower if coriander seeds are required.

Harvest the seed heads when they become dry and brown.

Dry the seeds thoroughly before storage or culinary use.
