Recommended Grow Bags

G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch 🔗

G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch 🔗
Provides useful depth and growing space for leafy chicory.

G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch 🔗
Suitable for growing a wider row or multiple plants together.

Avoid overcrowding to maintain good airflow and healthy leaf development.

Recommended Soil / Potting Mix

Use a fertile, loose and well-drained growing medium.

A practical GREEN GARDENS mix can be:

50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil) + 50% Vermicompost 🔗

Chicory benefits from fertile soil with consistent moisture but should not be kept waterlogged.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

1. Prepare the Growing Medium

Prepare a fine, loose and well-drained soil surface.

Chicory may be started in trays or sown directly in the final growing area.

2. Sow the Seeds

Sow approximately:

0.5–1 cm deep

Cover lightly with fine soil.

3. Water Gently

Water carefully after sowing.

Keep the soil evenly moist during germination.

Avoid disturbing freshly sown seeds with strong water pressure.

4. Germination

Seeds generally germinate within:

7–14 days

under suitable cool to mild conditions.

5. Light Requirements

Provide bright light after germination.

Once established, plants generally perform well with:

4–6+ hours of sunlight daily

In warmer conditions, some protection from intense afternoon heat can be beneficial.

6. Thin the Seedlings

Thin overcrowded seedlings once true leaves develop.

This allows stronger plants to develop better foliage.

7. Transplanting

If started in nursery trays, transplant seedlings when they are strong enough to handle and have several true leaves.

Water after transplanting to help plants establish.

8. Plant Spacing

Maintain approximately:

15–25 cm between plants

depending on whether the crop is being grown for baby leaves or mature foliage.

Closer spacing can be used for young leaf production.

9. Watering

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture.

Avoid allowing the soil to remain extremely dry for prolonged periods.

At the same time, avoid waterlogging.

10. Feeding

Chicory benefits from fertile soil but generally does not require excessive feeding.

Incorporate GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost 🔗 before planting.

Moderate feeding during growth can support healthy leaf production.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may encourage overly soft growth.

11. General Care

Keep the growing area reasonably free from weeds.

Maintain good airflow between plants.

Remove damaged or diseased leaves where necessary.

Monitor regularly for common leaf-feeding pests.

12. Harvesting Young Leaves

Young leaves can be harvested once they reach a useful size.

Harvest outer leaves while leaving the centre intact where possible.

This may allow continued leaf production.

13. Mature Harvest

For larger plants, allow the leaf rosette to develop fully before harvesting.

Cut mature leaves as required or harvest the whole plant depending on your preferred use.

Regular harvesting helps keep the crop productive and provides fresher leaves.
