Grow premium White Asparagus at home from seeds. White asparagus is produced from the same species as green asparagus, but the developing spears are kept away from sunlight so they remain pale, tender and mild in flavour.
Ideal for permanent kitchen-garden beds, raised beds and larger GREEN GARDENS Grow Bags. Because asparagus develops a deep perennial root system, provide generous soil volume, good drainage and a fertile medium prepared with GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost and Bhalu Mitti.
Germination Time: 14–28 days
Suitable Temperature: 15°C–28°C
Best Sowing Season: February, March & September - November

White Asparagus belongs to the same species as green asparagus, Asparagus officinalis.
The key difference is how the spears are grown. To produce white spears, the emerging shoots are covered with soil or otherwise excluded from light. Without sunlight, chlorophyll does not develop, so the spears remain pale white.
This method produces a distinctive asparagus crop with a more delicate appearance and traditionally prized texture.
White asparagus spears can be:
Harvest spears while they are tender and before the tips open.
Asparagus develops a substantial perennial root system, so larger containers are preferable.
G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch
Useful mainly for raising young seedlings before transplanting.
G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch
Suitable for establishing a young plant but may become restrictive long term.
G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch
Recommended among these options because it provides substantially more soil volume for crown and root development.
For long-term production, a deep garden bed or even larger container is preferable where possible.
Use:
50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil)
Mix thoroughly before sowing or transplanting.
The growing medium should be:
Excellent drainage is especially important because mature asparagus crowns should not remain in permanently waterlogged soil.
1. Soak the Seeds
Soak seeds in clean water for approximately 12–24 hours before sowing.
2. Prepare the Growing Medium
Mix 50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti thoroughly.
Prepare a loose, fine-textured seed-starting medium.
3. Sow the Seeds
Sow approximately:
1–2 cm deep
Cover lightly with fine soil.
4. Water Gently
Water with a fine shower.
Keep the growing medium consistently moist during germination.
5. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within approximately:
14–28 days
under suitable conditions.
Some seeds may emerge later, so avoid disturbing the soil too early.
6. Light Requirements
After germination, provide good light for seedling growth.
Established plants generally perform best with approximately 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
7. Thin the Seedlings
Remove weak or overcrowded seedlings once several true leaves develop.
8. Transplanting
Transplant once seedlings are sturdy and well rooted.
Handle the roots carefully and move plants into a permanent bed or large container.
9. Plant Spacing
For permanent garden planting, maintain approximately:
30–45 cm between plants
with adequate row spacing.
For containers, avoid crowding and preferably grow one established crown per sufficiently large container.
10. Watering
Maintain consistent moisture while young plants establish.
Once mature, water deeply when needed while allowing excess water to drain freely.
11. Feeding
The recommended growing medium already contains Vermicompost.
Additional GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost may be applied around established plants when required.
Avoid piling fertilizer directly against the crown.
12. First-Year Care
Allow young plants to develop full fern-like foliage.
Do not heavily harvest young plants, because the foliage is needed to strengthen the developing crown and root system.
13. Producing White Spears
To produce white asparagus, exclude light from the emerging spears.
A traditional method is to mound loose soil approximately:
20–30 cm above the crown
before spear emergence.
As shoots push upward, keep them covered so they remain pale.
Harvest before the spear tips emerge fully into sunlight.
14. Mature Plant Care
After the harvesting period, allow remaining shoots to grow into fern-like foliage.
This foliage helps the crown store energy for the following season.
Remove dry or yellow foliage after natural dieback.
15. Harvesting
Harvest only once plants are sufficiently established.
Cut or carefully lift young white spears while they are:
Asparagus grown from seed usually requires multiple growing seasons before regular harvesting, so it should be treated as a long-term crop.
