Tukh Malanga comes from Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum), an aromatic herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family.

It develops:

• Fragrant green leaves
• Branching upright growth
• Small flowers on spikes
• Small black seeds that swell when soaked

Tukh Malanga is not the same as Chia (Salvia hispanica).

Avoid standing water and continuously soggy soil.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

Sow directly in pots, grow bags or prepared garden beds.

Sowing depth:

Approx. 0.5 cm / ¼ inch

Cover lightly with fine growing medium.

Keep the soil:

Lightly and consistently moist until germination.

Germination

Seeds normally germinate within:

5–10 days

under suitable warm conditions.

Good germination requires:

• Warm soil
• Consistent moisture
• Shallow sowing
• Good drainage
• Fresh seed

Avoid sowing into:

Cold winter soil.

Recommended temperature:

20–30°C

Plant Spacing

Maintain approximately:

20–25 cm / 8–10 inches between plants.

This allows:

Good branching, airflow and seed production.

Sunlight

Provide:

Full sun.

Approximately:

6+ hours of direct sunlight daily

Watering

Keep young plants evenly moist during establishment.

Afterward:

Water when the upper soil layer starts to dry.

Avoid:

Continuous overwatering and waterlogging.

Harvest

Fresh leaves can begin to be harvested once plants are well established.

For Tukh Malanga seed production:

Allow plants to:

Flower naturally and form mature seed heads.

Harvest when:

Flower spikes and seed capsules become dry and brown.

Cut the dry flower spikes and collect the mature black seeds.
