G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch 🔗
Suitable for:
A small group of Straw Flower plants.
G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch 🔗
Recommended for a fuller group planting with adequate root space.
G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch 🔗
Excellent for:
Growing several plants together for a broad flowering and cut-flower display.
Use:
60% Bhalu Mitti / Sandy Soil + 30% GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost 🔗 + 10% Cocopeat
The growing medium should be:
Loose, moderately fertile and very well-draining.
Straw Flowers perform particularly well in:
Light, well-drained soil.
Avoid:
Established plants tolerate relatively dry conditions well.
Straw Flower seeds may be:
Started in seedling trays or direct sown in the final growing location.
For controlled germination, seedling trays are particularly convenient.
Fill the tray with:
Fine, moist and well-draining seed-starting medium.
Scatter the seeds:
Thinly over the surface.
Gently press them into contact with the growing medium.
Apply:
Only a very fine dusting of soil or vermiculite, if required.
Water using:
A fine mist or gentle spray.
Keep the growing medium:
Lightly and consistently moist until germination.
Straw Flower seeds require:
Light for germination.
Therefore:
Do not bury the seeds deeply.
Surface sow or:
Barely cover with a very thin layer of fine growing medium.
This is an important correction to the older GREEN GARDENS description that advised approximately 0.5 cm covering. Seed-growing guidance specifically states that Strawflower seeds need light to germinate.
Because the seeds are small:
Use gentle misting rather than strong watering.
Seeds generally germinate within approximately:
7–15 days
under favourable conditions.
Some conditions or seed lots may require slightly longer.
Good germination depends on:
Commercial sources report emergence from approximately 7–10 days, while other cultivar guidance reports germination around 15 days or slightly longer depending on conditions.
Recommended germination temperature:
18–20°C
This temperature range provides:
Good, relatively uniform germination.
Some production systems also successfully germinate Strawflower at somewhat warmer temperatures, but approximately 18–20°C is a practical home-gardening target.
After germination:
Provide strong light and good air circulation.
When seedlings develop approximately:
2–3 true leaves
and are strong enough to handle:
Transplant carefully into flower beds, pots or grow bags.
Water gently after transplanting and allow seedlings to establish before exposing them to unnecessary stress.
Once young plants become well established:
Pinch the main growing tip lightly.
This encourages:
Additional side branches and more flowering stems.
Branchier plants can produce:
A larger number of flowers for both garden display and cutting.
Specialist Strawflower growing guidance recommends pinching young plants to promote branching.
Maintain approximately:
25–30 cm / 10–12 inches between plants
for home garden cultivation.
Adequate spacing helps provide:
Good airflow, healthy branching and stronger flowering stems.
Commercial home-gardening guidance recommends approximately 12 inches between established plants.
Provide:
Full sun.
Approximately:
6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily
is recommended for:
Strong stems and abundant flowers.
The existing GREEN GARDENS listing also recommends 6–8 hours of sunlight.
During germination:
Keep the seed-starting medium lightly and consistently moist.
After establishment:
Allow the upper soil layer to begin drying before watering again.
Avoid:
Standing water and continuously saturated soil.
Established Straw Flowers are:
Reasonably drought tolerant, although sensible watering during active flowering helps maintain healthy plants.
At planting time, incorporate a moderate amount of:
into the growing medium.
Straw Flowers generally prefer:
Moderate fertility rather than heavy feeding.
Avoid excessive nitrogen because it may encourage:
Excessive leafy growth and softer stems instead of balanced flowering.
Straw Flowers produce:
Bright papery blooms on upright branching stems.
For a healthy and prolonged flowering display:
Regular harvesting and deadheading can help encourage:
Continued production of fresh flowering stems.
