Growing Instructions from Seeds

Press gently into the growing medium and cover with:

Only a very light sprinkling of fine soil or seed-starting mix.

Do not bury deeply.

A fine mist or gentle spray.

Lightly and consistently moist until germination.

Important Sowing Note

Salvia seeds are relatively small.

Therefore:

Avoid deep sowing.

is sufficient.

Maintain consistent moisture without saturating the seed tray.

Strong watering can move small seeds or cause uneven germination, so:

Fine misting is preferred during the early stage.

Germination

4–6 true leaves

and are strong enough to handle:

Transplant carefully into beds, pots or grow bags.

Handle the young root system gently.

After transplanting:

Water thoroughly and protect from severe stress until established.

Pinching for Bushier Plants

When young plants become established:

Pinch the growing tip lightly

to encourage additional side branches.

This can help produce:

Bushier plants with more flowering stems.

RHS also recommends pinching young Salvia growth to encourage bushiness.

Plant Spacing

Maintain approximately:

30–45 cm / 12–18 inches between plants

for normal garden cultivation.

Adequate spacing helps provide:

Good airflow, healthy branching and sufficient flowering space.

Larger, vigorous plants may benefit from additional room.

Sunlight

is preferable.

Salvia generally flowers most abundantly in good sunlight, although Salvia coccinea can tolerate partial shade.
