Roselle Seeds (Hibiscus sabdariffa) (SUMMER)

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) develops into a vigorous, upright and bushy plant with attractive lobed foliage and hibiscus-like flowers followed by fleshy red calyces.

The calyces are the most commonly harvested part and are valued for their distinctive tart flavour and deep red colour.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

Sow seeds approximately:

1–1.5 cm deep

Seeds may be started in seedling trays or directly in their final growing location.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant carefully into larger pots, grow bags or garden beds.

Germination

5–10 days

For best results:

• Maintain warm temperatures

• Keep the soil evenly moist

• Provide good drainage

• Avoid overwatering

• Move seedlings into strong light after germination

Plant Spacing

Maintain approximately:

60–90 cm / 24–36 inches between plants

Roselle develops into a large bushy plant and benefits from adequate space.

Sunlight

Provide:

Full sun — preferably 6–8 hours or more of direct sunlight daily.

Strong sunlight promotes vigorous growth and healthy flowering.

Watering

Water regularly during establishment.

Once established, allow the upper soil layer to partially dry between watering.

Roselle tolerates some dryness but performs best with consistent moisture during active growth.

Growth & Harvest

Roselle develops a tall, upright and branching growth habit.

As days become shorter, plants begin producing hibiscus-like flowers followed by fleshy red calyces. Roselle is a short-day plant, so flowering naturally increases as nights become longer.

Harvest calyces when they are:

Plump, tender and bright red

before they become tough or overly mature.

The calyces may be used fresh or dried for teas, drinks, syrups, jams and other preparations.

Feeding

Mix GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost into the soil at planting.

Additional moderate organic feeding during active growth can support vigorous plants and good calyx production.

Avoid excessive nitrogen feeding.
