Red Round Radish is a traditional heirloom radish type grown for its small to medium round red roots and crisp white interior.

It is especially suitable for home gardeners because it grows quickly, performs well in containers and can be harvested progressively as roots reach a useful size.

As an heirloom type, slight variation in root size, shape and maturity can occur naturally between plants.

Recommended Grow Bags

G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch
Suitable for a compact planting with proper spacing.

G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch
Provides useful soil depth and space for several radish plants.

G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch
Recommended for a larger planting with adequate spacing.

Avoid overcrowding, as dense planting may produce smaller or poorly shaped roots.

Recommended Soil / Potting Mix

Use:

50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil)

Mix thoroughly before sowing.

The growing medium should be:

  • Loose
  • Fine textured
  • Well drained
  • Moisture-retentive
  • Free from stones
  • Free from hard clods
  • Free from hard compaction

Avoid fresh manure and excessive nitrogen, as these may encourage leafy growth instead of good root development.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

1. Prepare the Growing Medium
Mix 50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti thoroughly and prepare a fine, loose surface.

2. Sow Directly
Radish is best direct-sown in its final growing location.

Avoid transplanting, as root disturbance can affect shape and development.

3. Sowing Depth
Sow approximately:

1–1.5 cm deep

Cover lightly with fine soil.

4. Water Gently
Water after sowing and keep the growing medium consistently moist.

Avoid waterlogging.

5. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within:

3–7 days

under suitable conditions.

6. Light Requirements
Provide approximately 5–6+ hours of sunlight daily.

During warmer weather, morning sun with some afternoon protection can be helpful.

7. Thin the Seedlings
Once seedlings are established, thin crowded plants carefully.

Maintain approximately:

5–7 cm between plants

for good root development.

8. Watering
Maintain regular and even soil moisture.

Avoid prolonged dryness followed by heavy watering.

9. Feeding
The recommended growing medium already contains Vermicompost.

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, as too much foliage can reduce root quality.

10. Weed Control
Keep the growing area weed-free and avoid disturbing the developing roots.

11. Warm-Weather Care
For summer sowing:

  • Sow during the milder part of the season
  • Maintain consistent moisture
  • Avoid severe heat stress
  • Provide light afternoon protection where practical
  • Harvest promptly once roots reach suitable size

12. Harvesting
Harvest while roots are round, firm and tender.

Do not leave mature radishes in the soil too long, as over-mature roots may become fibrous, hollow or excessively pungent.
