Red Long Radish is a traditional heirloom radish type grown for its elongated red roots and crisp interior.
Unlike small round radishes, this type develops longer roots and therefore benefits from deeper, loose soil free from stones and hard clods.
Because it is an heirloom type, plants are generally valued for traditional characteristics rather than hybrid uniformity.
Red Long Radish can be used in:
Young healthy leaves may also be used in suitable cooked dishes.
G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch
Suitable for a compact planting where proper spacing is maintained.
G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch
Recommended for better root depth and healthy long-radish development.
G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch
A practical option for growing several plants together with adequate spacing.
Avoid overcrowding, as dense planting can result in smaller or poorly shaped roots.
Use:
50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil)
Mix thoroughly before sowing.
The growing medium should be:
Avoid fresh manure and excessive nitrogen, as these may encourage too much leafy growth at the expense of root development.
1. Prepare the Growing Medium
Mix 50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti thoroughly.
Remove stones, hard lumps and undecomposed material so roots can grow straight.
2. Sow Directly
Radish is best direct-sown in its final growing location.
Avoid transplanting, as root disturbance can affect shape and development.
3. Sowing Depth
Sow approximately:
1–1.5 cm deep
Cover lightly with fine soil.
4. Water Gently
Water after sowing and maintain consistent moisture.
Avoid waterlogging.
5. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within:
3–7 days
under suitable conditions.
6. Light Requirements
Provide approximately 5–6+ hours of sunlight daily.
7. Thin the Seedlings
Once seedlings are established, thin crowded plants carefully.
Maintain approximately:
7–10 cm between plants
to allow elongated roots enough room to develop.
8. Watering
Maintain even soil moisture throughout growth.
Avoid prolonged dryness followed by heavy watering, as irregular moisture can affect root quality.
9. Feeding
The recommended growing medium already contains Vermicompost.
Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer because it may encourage foliage rather than root development.
10. Weed Control
Keep the growing area weed-free and avoid disturbing the developing roots.
11. Root Development
Keep soil loose around the plants and avoid compacting the growing surface.
12. Harvesting
Harvest once roots reach a useful size while they are still firm and tender.
Do not leave mature radishes in the soil too long, as over-mature roots may become fibrous, hollow or excessively pungent.
