Key Features

  • Pack Size: 10 seeds per pack
  • Brand: Buzzy Seeds
  • Botanical Name: Rhodochiton atrosanguineus
  • Plant Type: Tender perennial climber, often grown as an annual
  • Flowers: Hanging deep maroon-purple blooms with rose-purple calyces
  • Growth Habit: Climbing or trailing; approximately 1.5–3 m with support
  • Light: Morning sun to partial shade; protect from intense afternoon heat

Growing from Seeds

  1. Fill a seedling tray with fine, moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
  2. Surface-sow 1–2 tiny seeds per cell. Press lightly into the surface; do not bury deeply, as light helps germination.
  3. Maintain gentle moisture and an ideal germination temperature of approximately 20–24°C.
  4. Allow about 14–40 days for germination. Germination may be slow or uneven.
  5. Transplant established seedlings into pots, grow bags or garden beds, spacing plants approximately 25–30 cm apart. Provide climbing support early.

Soil & Watering

Use fertile, loose and well-draining soil. A suitable potting blend is 50% garden soil, 30% GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost and 20% cocopeat. Maintain even moisture without waterlogging; a soil pH of approximately 6.0–7.0 is suitable. Protect plants from harsh afternoon sun during very hot weather.

Support & Recommended Grow Bags

Train the vine over a trellis, netting, arch or climbing frame, or allow stems to trail from decorative containers.

  • G-11 (11 × 10 inch): One plant with support
  • G-12 (12 × 12 inch): One or two plants with a trellis
  • G-20 F (20 × 16 inch): Two or three plants with adequate spacing
  • G-24 F (24 × 18 inch): Larger ornamental climbing display

Flowering & Care

Under suitable growing conditions, the first flowers may appear approximately 4–5 months after sowing. Apply light, balanced fertilizer during active growth and avoid excessive nitrogen. Purple Bell Vine is a tender perennial where frost-free conditions permit, but it is often grown as an annual.
