Suitable for one young Moonflower vine where regular watering and a strong climbing support are provided.
Recommended for one vigorous Moonflower vine with better root space for sustained growth.
Excellent for growing several vines together to create a broad flowering screen.
For very vigorous long-term growth, a larger GREEN GARDENS grow bag may provide additional root space.
Use:
60% Bhalu Mitti / Sandy Soil + 30% GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost + 10% Cocopeat
The growing medium should be:
Loose, fertile and well-draining.
Avoid:
Heavy compact soil
Poor drainage
Continuous waterlogging
Moonflower seeds have a hard seed coat.
For improved and faster germination:
Lightly nick or gently scarify the seed coat, then soak the seeds in water for approximately 12–24 hours before sowing.
Sow approximately:
1–1.5 cm deep
and cover lightly with fine growing medium.
Keep the growing medium:
Lightly and consistently moist until germination.
Once seedlings begin vigorous growth, provide a trellis, net, fence or other climbing support.
Seeds generally germinate within:
7–21 days
under suitable warm conditions.
For successful germination:
Use fresh seeds
Lightly scarify or nick the hard seed coat
Pre-soak seeds for 12–24 hours
Maintain warm temperatures
Keep the growing medium lightly moist
Maintain good drainage
Avoid cold and continuously saturated soil
Maintain approximately:
30–60 cm / 12–24 inches between plants
when growing several vines together.
Allow sufficient space for vigorous vine growth and good airflow.
Provide:
Full sun
For strong growth and better flowering:
6+ hours of direct sunlight daily
is recommended.
In containers during Lahore's most intense midsummer conditions, maintaining adequate root moisture is particularly important.
Water regularly while young vines are becoming established.
During active summer growth:
Water when the upper soil layer begins to dry.
Moonflower develops substantial foliage and may require frequent watering in hot weather, particularly when grown in containers.
Keep the soil moderately moist but never continuously waterlogged.
Moonflower is a vigorous twining climber.
Provide:
Strong trellis, netting, fence, pergola, arch or balcony railing
from an early stage.
Guide young stems gently onto the support.
Once established, the vine can rapidly cover a large vertical area.
One of Moonflower's most distinctive characteristics is its flowering time.
The large white buds typically:
Begin opening around late afternoon or evening and remain open into the night.
Their pale white colour makes them particularly striking after sunset and gives the plant its well-known name, Moonflower.
At planting time, mix:
into the growing medium.
Light balanced feeding during active growth can support healthy vines and abundant flowering.
Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, as excessive leafy growth may reduce flower production.
