Mongray is a radish-type crop cultivated primarily for its edible green seed pods.

Unlike ordinary radish varieties grown for swollen roots, Mongray is allowed to mature further so the plants flower and produce long, tender pods.

The pods are harvested while young and crisp, before they become fibrous and the seeds harden.

Key Features

  • Grown for edible green pods
  • Traditional winter vegetable
  • Tender, crisp young pods
  • Cool-season crop
  • Suitable for kitchen gardens
  • Can be grown in pots and grow bags
  • Useful for repeated harvesting
  • Distinctive alternative to root radish

Culinary Uses

Tender Mongray pods can be used in:

  • Mongray sabzi
  • Aloo mongray
  • Mixed vegetable dishes
  • Stir-fries
  • Curries
  • Pickles
  • Traditional Pakistani home cooking

For the best eating quality, harvest pods while they are young, green and tender.

Recommended Grow Bags

G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch
Suitable for a compact planting with proper spacing.

G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch
Provides additional soil volume for stronger plants and better pod production.

G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch
Recommended for growing several Mongray plants together with adequate spacing.

Because Mongray plants are allowed to grow through flowering and pod formation, they generally need more space than radishes harvested early for roots.

Recommended Soil / Potting Mix

Use:

50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil)

Mix thoroughly before sowing.

The growing medium should be:

  • Loose
  • Fertile
  • Well drained
  • Moisture-retentive
  • Free from hard compaction

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, as too much leafy growth can reduce flowering and pod development.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

1. Prepare the Growing Medium
Mix 50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti thoroughly and prepare a loose, level growing surface.

2. Sow Directly
Mongray is best direct-sown in its final growing location.

Sow approximately:

1–1.5 cm deep

Cover lightly with fine soil.

3. Water Gently
Water after sowing and keep the growing medium consistently moist.

Avoid waterlogging.

4. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within:

4–10 days

under suitable conditions.

5. Light Requirements
Provide approximately 5–6+ hours of sunlight daily.

Good light supports strong plants, flowering and pod production.

6. Thin the Seedlings
Once seedlings are established, remove excessive crowding.

Maintain approximately:

15–20 cm between plants

for better branching and airflow.

7. Watering
Maintain regular and even soil moisture.

Avoid prolonged dryness, especially during flowering and pod development.

8. Feeding
The recommended growing medium already contains Vermicompost.

Additional GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost may be applied lightly if required.

Avoid excessive fertilizer application.

9. Flowering
Unlike root radish, Mongray plants are allowed to mature and flower.

The flowers are followed by developing green seed pods.

10. Plant Support
If plants become tall or heavily branched, light staking may help prevent lodging in windy locations.

11. Pod Development
Check plants regularly once pods begin forming.

Young pods are the preferred edible stage.

12. Harvesting
Harvest pods when they are:

  • Green
  • Tender
  • Crisp
  • Still immature

Do not allow pods to remain too long on the plant, as over-mature pods may become tough, fibrous and seedy.

Regular picking can help maintain a supply of tender pods.
