Recommended Soil / Potting Mix

50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil)

Mix thoroughly before sowing.

The growing medium should be:

• Fertile
• Well drained
• Moisture-retentive
• Free from hard compaction

Avoid allowing the growing medium to dry out completely during active leaf growth.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

1. Prepare the Growing Medium
Mix 50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti thoroughly and level the surface.

2. Sow the Seeds
Sow seeds approximately:

0.3–0.5 cm deep

Because lettuce seeds are small, cover only lightly with fine soil.

3. Water Gently
Use a fine mist or gentle shower to avoid disturbing the seeds.

Keep the surface evenly moist.

4. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within:

5–12 days

under suitable conditions.

5. Light Requirements
Provide approximately 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.

In warmer weather, some protection from strong afternoon sun may help maintain better leaf quality.

6. Thin the Seedlings
Thin overcrowded seedlings once true leaves develop.

For baby-leaf harvesting, plants can be grown more closely.

7. Plant Spacing
For larger individual plants, maintain approximately:

15–20 cm between plants

For baby-leaf production, closer spacing can be used.

8. Watering
Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Lettuce can become stressed when allowed to dry excessively.

9. Feeding
The recommended soil mix already contains Vermicompost.

Additional GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost may be applied lightly if leaf growth becomes weak.

10. Harvesting Baby Leaves
Begin harvesting young outer leaves once they reach a usable size.

Cut above the growing point if using a cut-and-come-again method.

11. Harvesting Mature Leaves
Pick the larger outer leaves first while allowing the centre to continue growing.

12. Repeated Harvesting
Regular harvesting of tender outer leaves can extend the useful harvest period under cool growing conditions.
