Germination & Temperature

Germination Time: 10–20 days
Suitable Temperature: 15°C–28°C

Mint seeds are small and should be sown shallowly.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist during germination without making it waterlogged.

Recommended Grow Bags

G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch
Suitable for a compact group of mint plants.

G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch
A practical option for developing a fuller mint patch with additional root space.

G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch
Ideal for producing a larger patch of mint for frequent harvesting.

Mint spreads actively, so containers and grow bags are particularly useful for keeping its growth controlled.

Recommended Soil / Potting Mix

Use:

50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil)

Mix thoroughly before sowing.

The growing medium should be:

  • Loose
  • Fertile
  • Moisture-retentive
  • Well drained
  • Free from hard compaction

Mint appreciates regular moisture but should not remain permanently waterlogged.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

1. Prepare the Growing Medium
Mix 50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti thoroughly and prepare a fine, loose surface.

2. Sow the Seeds
Scatter mint seeds thinly over the surface.

Cover with only a very light layer of fine soil, approximately 2–5 mm deep.

Do not bury the seeds deeply.

3. Water Gently
Use a fine mist or gentle shower so the small seeds are not displaced.

Keep the surface consistently moist.

4. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within 10–20 days under suitable conditions.

Maintain approximately 15°C–28°C.

5. Light Requirements
Mint grows well in full sun to partial shade.

In warmer areas, morning sunlight with some afternoon protection can help maintain tender foliage.

6. Thin the Seedlings
Once seedlings develop several true leaves, remove excessive crowding and keep the strongest plants.

7. Transplanting
If started in a seed tray, transplant carefully once seedlings are established.

Suitable final containers include G-11, G-12 and G-24 grow bags.

8. Plant Spacing
Maintain approximately 15–20 cm between plants for fuller individual growth.

Closer spacing can be used when growing mint as a dense herb patch.

9. Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist.

Mint generally prefers more consistent moisture than Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary.

Avoid allowing the soil to remain completely dry for extended periods.

10. Feeding
The recommended growing medium already contains 50% Vermicompost.

Additional GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost may be applied lightly during active growth if required.

11. Pruning & Pinching
Pinch growing tips regularly to encourage:

  • More branching
  • Fuller foliage
  • Fresh shoots
  • Compact growth

Remove flower stalks if your main goal is continuous leaf production.

12. Harvesting
Begin harvesting once plants are well established.

Cut young stems and leaves as required, leaving enough growth for the plant to recover.

Regular harvesting encourages fresh new shoots.
