The vigorous climbing vines grow best with the support of a trellis, net, fence, or bamboo frame. Its young leaves and tender shoots can be harvested regularly for use in cooked vegetable dishes, soups, curries, and stir-fries.

Growing Instructions

1. Sowing Season in Pakistan

Best sowing time: March- April, and September to November

In warmer areas, sowing may continue slightly later if temperatures remain suitable. Protect young seedlings from severe cold or frost.

2. Seed Preparation

Soak the seeds in normal or slightly warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing. This helps soften the seed coat and may improve germination.

3. Soil Preparation

Use loose, fertile, and well-draining soil rich in organic matter.

Recommended soil mix:

• 50% Bhalu mitti or good garden soil

• 40% vermicompost or well-rotted compost

• 10% cocopeat or river sand for improved drainage

Avoid heavy, compacted, or permanently waterlogged soil.

4. Sowing Method

Sow the seeds directly in the final container or start them in seedling trays.

• Sowing depth: ½ inch

• Place 1–2 seeds per spot

• Keep the soil lightly moist

• Thin out weaker seedlings after germination

5. Germination

Seeds generally germinate within 7–21 days, depending on temperature, seed condition, and soil moisture.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not soggy during germination.

6. Container and Spacing

Malabar Spinach develops a vigorous root system and climbing vines.

• Recommended container: 12×12 inch grow bag or larger

• Keep approximately 12–18 inches between plants

• Grow one healthy plant per medium-sized container for better development

7. Trellis and Support

Provide a trellis, net, fence, bamboo poles, or climbing frame soon after the plant begins to grow.

Guide the young vines gently towards the support. Timely support keeps the plant upright, improves airflow, and makes harvesting easier.

8. Sunlight

Provide at least 5–7 hours of direct sunlight daily.

In very hot conditions, light afternoon shade can help protect the leaves from excessive heat stress.

9. Watering

Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist.

• Do not allow the soil to remain completely dry for long periods

• Avoid standing water around the roots

• Water more frequently in containers when the weather is warm or windy

10. Fertilizer and Feeding

Mix vermicompost or mature compost into the soil before planting.

After establishment, apply a light layer of vermicompost every 3–4 weeks. A balanced liquid organic fertilizer may also be used in moderation according to label directions.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it may produce very soft growth.

11. Pruning and Maintenance

Pinch the growing tips when the vine becomes established. This encourages branching and produces a fuller plant.

Remove:

• Damaged leaves

• Yellow leaves

• Weak shoots

• Excessively crowded growth

Regular harvesting also encourages fresh new shoots.

12. Harvesting

Tender leaves and young shoots can usually be harvested approximately 50–70 days after sowing, depending on growing conditions.

Pick a few leaves at a time and allow enough foliage to remain on the plant for continued growth. Regular harvesting helps maintain tender and productive vines.

13. Pest and Disease Care

Inspect the leaves regularly for aphids, mealybugs, caterpillars, and other common garden pests.

Maintain:

• Good air circulation

• Proper plant spacing

• Clean growing conditions

• Controlled watering

Avoid keeping the leaves wet overnight, especially during cool or humid weather.
