Recommended Soil / Potting Mix

Use a loose, fertile and well-draining growing medium. A suitable home-garden mix is:

60% well-draining garden soil / sandy loam + 20% GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost 🔗 + 20% cocopeat.

Lupins prefer soil that drains freely while retaining moderate moisture. Avoid heavy compact soil, permanently wet media and excessive nitrogen feeding.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

Lupins can be sown directly in their final growing position or started carefully in a seedling tray and transplanted while young.

• Sow seeds approximately 1–2 cm deep.
• Because Lupin seeds have a relatively hard seed coat, light scarification or soaking overnight can help improve and speed germination.
• Cover lightly with fine growing medium.
• Water gently after sowing.
• Maintain light, consistent moisture until seedlings emerge.

Germination

Seeds generally germinate in approximately 14–21 days under favourable conditions.

Germination speed can vary with seed freshness, temperature, moisture, sowing depth and pre-soaking or scarification.

Ideal Germination Temperature

A suitable germination range is approximately 15–20°C.

Cool, mild conditions favour establishment. Excessive heat may slow or reduce successful germination and early seedling growth.

Important Sowing Note

For Lahore and other hot plains of Pakistan, the recommended seed-sowing window is October–November. Avoid delaying sowing into warmer weather because Lupins perform best during the cool season.

Plant Spacing

Maintain approximately 20–30 cm / 8–12 inches between plants in beds. In a G-11 grow bag, keep one main plant per bag for better root room, airflow and flowering.

Sunlight

Provide full sun, ideally around 6 hours or more of direct sunlight daily. Good sunlight supports sturdy stems, compact growth and stronger flowering.

Watering

Keep the growing medium lightly moist during germination and early seedling growth. Once established, water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry.

Avoid permanent saturation and standing water around the roots.

Feeding

Use moderate organic nutrition. Lupins generally do not need heavy feeding. A small amount of GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost 🔗 mixed into the growing medium is usually sufficient for home cultivation.

Avoid excessive high-nitrogen fertilizer, which can encourage lush foliage at the expense of balanced flowering.

Flowering

With timely October–November sowing in the hot plains, plants typically develop their main flowering display during the late-winter to spring period, depending on local temperature and growing conditions.
