Kulfa Saag (قُلفہ ساگ) or Purslane is a traditional Pakistani leafy vegetable known for its tender, juicy leaves and refreshing, slightly tangy flavor. It’s a heat-tolerant, fast-growing plant that thrives in summer and is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A & C, calcium, and iron.
Kulfa is used in curries, stews, and salads, and is cherished for its cooling and digestive properties. It’s an excellent choice for home gardeners who want an easy-to-grow, nutritious summer green.
1. Soil:
Grows best in well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Tolerates poor soil but performs best with compost-enriched soil.
2. Sowing Time (Pakistan):
Best sown from March to September — thrives in warm weather.
3. Sowing Method:
Sow seeds on the soil surface and lightly press; do not cover deeply.
Keep soil moist until germination.
Space plants 6–8 inches apart.
4. Watering:
Moderate watering is sufficient. Purslane is drought-tolerant, but light regular watering improves yield.
5. Sunlight:
Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) for best growth.
6. Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 7–10 days under warm conditions.
7. Harvesting:
Ready to harvest in 35–50 days after sowing. Cut tender stems and leaves regularly to encourage new growth.
