Based on the Horti Tops® seed packet for Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium), here is the detailed description of the sowing season and instructions:
Outdoor Sowing: The ideal time to sow is from early to mid-summer (Febraury to March).
Flowering Period: This is a perennial plant (Overblijvend), meaning it will return year after year. It typically takes about 120 days to reach maturity/flowering from the time of sowing.
Horti Tops recommends two main methods for starting your Yarrow:
Seedbed Method (Recommended):
Sow the seeds in a prepared seedbed in open ground during the spring or early summer.
Pricking Out: Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, "prick them out" (carefully transplant them) to give them more space to grow.
Final Planting: Move them to their permanent garden location once they are established.
Direct Sowing:
Sow directly into the garden in rows.
Thinning: Once they sprout, thin the plants out so they are not overcrowded.
Germination Time: Expect sprouts within 14–20 days.
Sowing Depth: Cover seeds very lightly with soil (they require some light to germinate).
Plant Spacing: Maintain a distance of 35 x 35 cm between plants to allow for their spreading habit.
Mature Height: The plants will grow to approximately 85 cm tall.
Position: Best grown in full sun and well-drained soil.
Harvesting: You can begin harvesting the flowers once the plant is in full bloom.
Important Tip: Do not cut the plant too severely when harvesting or pruning, as it needs some foliage to remain healthy for the next season.
Usage: Yarrow is excellent for both fresh-cut bouquets and dried floral arrangements.
