Ground Cherry / Golden Berry (sold by Buzzy® as Physalis Edulis Golden Berry, Physalis peruviana) produces sweet-tart, golden-yellow edible berries enclosed in delicate papery husks. A rewarding fruiting plant for sunny kitchen gardens, patios and large containers.

Best Sowing Season in Pakistan

February–April (recommended). August–September is an option in warmer areas where young plants can be protected from winter cold. Start seeds in a tray and transplant only when conditions are warm.

Key Features

  • Small, golden, husk-covered edible fruit
  • Enjoy fully ripe berries fresh, in jams, desserts and garnishes
  • Suitable for raised beds and containers with good drainage
  • Germination: approximately 10–21 days in warm conditions
  • Ideal germination temperature: 22–28°C
  • Sunlight: 6–8 hours of direct sun daily

Recommended Grow Bags & Soil

Use a GREEN GARDENS G-12 Grow Bag for one plant, or the larger G-20F Grow Bag for longer-term growth and fruiting. Use a fertile, free-draining mix, such as 50% Bhalu soil and 50% vermicompost, with cocopeat or coarse sand added if necessary to improve drainage.

Basic Growing Steps

  1. Sow seeds about 3–5 mm deep in a seed tray or small pot.
  2. Keep the growing medium lightly moist, not waterlogged, in a warm bright place.
  3. Transplant when seedlings have 4–5 true leaves and the weather is suitable.
  4. Water regularly, provide sunlight, and support spreading branches if necessary.
  5. Harvest only fully ripe golden berries when the papery husks dry and turn tan. Avoid eating green, unripe fruit.
