Green Globe Artichoke is a classic globe artichoke variety valued for its large ornamental foliage and edible immature flower buds.
Plants form broad rosettes of deeply divided, silver-green leaves. Mature plants eventually produce thick flower stalks topped with rounded green flower buds.
The edible portion is harvested before the flower opens. If left unharvested, the bud develops into a striking purple thistle-like flower.
Green Globe can become much larger than common leafy vegetables, making adequate spacing particularly important.
Green Globe Artichoke flower buds can be:
The tender inner heart is especially valued for culinary use.
Harvest buds before the scales open widely and before flowering begins.
Artichokes eventually become large plants, so container size matters.
G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch
Useful mainly for raising younger plants before moving them to a larger final growing space.
G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch
Can support a young or compact plant but may become restrictive as the artichoke matures.
G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch
Recommended among these options for one mature Green Globe Artichoke because it provides substantially more soil volume and growing space.
For long-term cultivation, larger containers or open ground are preferable to small pots.
Use:
50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil)
Mix thoroughly before sowing or transplanting.
The growing medium should be:
Artichokes appreciate fertile soil and regular moisture but should not remain continuously waterlogged.
1. Prepare the Seeds
Optional: soak seeds in clean water for approximately 8–12 hours before sowing.
2. Prepare the Growing Medium
Mix 50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti thoroughly.
Use a fine, loose medium for seed starting.
3. Sow the Seeds
Sow approximately:
1–1.5 cm deep
Cover lightly with fine soil.
4. Water Gently
Water with a fine shower and maintain consistent moisture.
Do not allow the seed-starting medium to become waterlogged.
5. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within:
10–21 days
under suitable conditions.
6. Light Requirements
After establishment, provide approximately 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
In very hot weather, some afternoon protection may help reduce heat stress.
7. Thin the Seedlings
If several seedlings emerge together, retain the strongest plants and remove excessive crowding.
8. Transplanting
Transplant seedlings when they are sturdy and have approximately 4–6 true leaves.
Handle roots carefully.
9. Plant Spacing
Artichokes need considerably more space than many common vegetables.
Maintain approximately:
90–120 cm between mature plants
when growing in open ground.
For containers, ideally grow one plant per large container.
10. Watering
Water deeply and regularly.
Allow the upper soil to begin drying slightly between watering, but avoid prolonged drought during active growth.
11. Feeding
The recommended growing medium already contains Vermicompost.
Additional GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost may be applied lightly around established plants when required.
Avoid placing fertilizer directly against the crown.
12. Mulching
A light organic mulch can help:
Keep mulch slightly away from the main crown.
13. General Care
Remove damaged or yellow leaves and maintain good airflow around mature plants.
Because artichokes become large, avoid overcrowding them with nearby crops.
14. Flower-Bud Development
Mature plants develop thick stems topped with rounded green buds.
Monitor buds regularly as they increase in size.
15. Harvesting
Harvest the flower buds while they are:
Cut the bud with a short section of stem attached.
Do not wait until the scales spread widely or the purple flower begins opening if the bud is intended for eating.
