Green Asparagus is a perennial vegetable valued for its tender edible spears and long productive life once properly established.

Young shoots emerge from an underground crown. When spears are allowed to grow instead of being harvested, they develop into tall, fine, fern-like foliage that helps strengthen the root system for future growth.

Asparagus requires more patience than quick seasonal vegetables. Plants grown from seed need time to establish a strong crown before regular harvesting begins.

Key Features

  • Perennial vegetable crop
  • Produces tender green edible spears
  • Long-lived once established
  • Suitable for permanent kitchen gardens
  • Attractive fern-like mature foliage
  • Can be grown in large containers
  • Suitable for winter and spring sowing
  • Excellent choice for experienced home gardeners

Culinary Uses

Fresh asparagus spears can be:

  • Steamed
  • Grilled
  • Roasted
  • Stir-fried
  • Sautéed
  • Added to soups
  • Used in pasta
  • Added to omelettes
  • Served in salads
  • Used as a side vegetable

Harvest young spears while they are tender and before the tips begin opening.

Recommended Grow Bags

Asparagus develops a substantial perennial root system, so larger and deeper containers are preferable.

G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch
Useful mainly for raising young asparagus plants before moving them to a larger permanent location.

G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch
Suitable for establishing a young plant, but may become restrictive for long-term mature growth.

G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch
Recommended among these options because it provides substantially more soil volume for developing crowns and roots.

For long-term production, an even deeper large container or permanent garden bed is preferable where available.

Recommended Soil / Potting Mix

Use:

50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil)

Mix thoroughly before sowing or transplanting.

The growing medium should be:

  • Loose
  • Fertile
  • Deep
  • Well drained
  • Moisture-retentive
  • Free from hard compaction

Excellent drainage is particularly important because established asparagus crowns should not remain in permanently waterlogged soil.

Growing Instructions from Seeds

1. Soak the Seeds
Soak asparagus seeds in clean water for approximately 12–24 hours before sowing.

2. Prepare the Growing Medium
Mix 50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti thoroughly.

Prepare a loose, fine and well-drained seed-starting medium.

3. Sow the Seeds
Sow approximately:

1–2 cm deep

Cover lightly with fine soil.

4. Water Gently
Water with a fine shower.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist throughout germination.

5. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within approximately:

14–28 days

under suitable conditions.

Some seeds may emerge later, so avoid disturbing the soil too early.

6. Light Requirements
After germination, provide good light.

Established asparagus performs best with approximately 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

7. Thin the Seedlings
Remove weak or excessively crowded seedlings once several true leaves develop.

8. Transplanting
Transplant seedlings once they are sturdy and well rooted.

Handle the young roots carefully.

Move them into a permanent garden bed or sufficiently large container.

9. Plant Spacing
For permanent garden planting, maintain approximately:

30–45 cm between plants

with adequate space between rows.

For containers, avoid overcrowding and preferably grow one established crown per appropriately large container.

10. Watering
Maintain consistent moisture while plants are establishing.

Once mature, water deeply when required while allowing excess water to drain freely.

11. Feeding
The recommended growing medium already contains Vermicompost.

Additional GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost may be applied around established plants when required.

Avoid piling fertilizer directly against the crown.

12. First-Year Care
Allow young plants to develop their fern-like foliage.

Do not heavily harvest young asparagus plants, because foliage is needed to strengthen the developing crown and root system.

13. Mature Plant Care
Allow foliage to grow freely after the harvesting period.

Healthy fern-like growth helps store energy in the crown for the following season.

Remove old yellow or dry foliage when it naturally dies back.

14. Harvesting
Harvest only once plants are sufficiently established.

Cut or snap young spears while they are:

  • Tender
  • Firm
  • Green
  • Still tightly tipped

Avoid removing every spear from young plants.

Asparagus grown from seed commonly needs multiple growing seasons before regular harvesting, so it should be considered a long-term crop rather than a quick vegetable.
