Excellent for growing several plants together for a broad and colourful summer display.
Use:
60% Bhalu Mitti / Sandy Soil + 30% GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost + 10% Cocopeat
The growing medium should be:
Loose, moderately fertile and well-draining.
Gomphrena tolerates relatively lean soils once established and generally does not require excessively rich growing media.
Avoid:
Heavy compact soil
Poor drainage
Continuous waterlogging
Gomphrena seeds can be:
Direct sown or started in seedling trays.
For improved germination, seeds may be:
Soaked in water for approximately 12–24 hours before sowing.
Sow approximately:
0.5–1 cm deep
and cover lightly with fine growing medium.
Keep the growing medium:
Lightly and consistently moist until germination.
Once seedlings are established and large enough to handle, transplant carefully into their final pots, grow bags or flower beds.
Seeds generally germinate within:
7–14 days
under suitable warm conditions.
For successful germination:
Use fresh seeds
Maintain warm temperatures
Keep the growing medium lightly moist
Avoid deep sowing
Maintain good drainage
Provide bright light after emergence
Maintain approximately:
20–30 cm / 8–12 inches between plants
to encourage healthy bushy growth, good airflow and abundant flowering.
For mass planting, plants may be spaced slightly closer for a denser flowering effect.
Provide:
Full sun
For compact growth and abundant flowering:
6+ hours of direct sunlight daily
is recommended.
Gomphrena performs especially well in bright, sunny and warm garden locations.
Water regularly while seedlings are becoming established.
After establishment:
Water when the upper soil layer begins to dry.
Gomphrena becomes reasonably drought tolerant once established, but regular moderate watering supports stronger flowering.
Avoid continuous waterlogging.
At planting time, mix a moderate quantity of:
into the growing medium.
Gomphrena generally does not require heavy feeding.
Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, as overly rich feeding may encourage foliage growth instead of abundant flowering.
Gomphrena is especially suitable for dried flower arrangements.
For drying:
Harvest flower stems when blooms are fully coloured but still firm.
Tie small bunches together and hang them upside down in a dry, shaded and well-ventilated location.
The papery flower heads retain their shape and colour remarkably well after drying.
