Complete Growing Instructions

1. Select the Right Location

Plant Gladiolus in a location receiving approximately 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Full sun encourages:

  • Strong stems

  • Healthy foliage

  • Better flowering

  • Good flower colour

  • Stronger flower spikes

Avoid heavily shaded locations.

2. Prepare the Soil

Gladiolus prefers:

  • Fertile soil

  • Loose soil

  • Well-draining soil

  • Soil enriched with organic matter

Loosen the soil thoroughly before planting.

Organic compost or vermicompost can be incorporated into the planting area to improve soil fertility and structure.

Avoid areas where water remains standing after irrigation or rain.

3. How to Plant Gladiolus Bulbs

Plant each bulb with:

Pointed growing side facing upward
Flat/root side facing downward

Sowing Depth

Plant approximately:

3 inches deep

Bulb-to-Bulb Distance

Maintain:

3–4 inches between bulbs

This spacing provides adequate room for plant development and airflow.

4. Watering

Water thoroughly after planting.

Afterwards:

  • Keep the soil moderately moist

  • Water according to soil condition

  • Avoid excessive watering

  • Do not allow prolonged waterlogging

Good drainage is particularly important for healthy bulbs.

5. Care After Germination

Once shoots appear:

  • Keep plants in full sun

  • Maintain appropriate moisture

  • Keep the area weed-free

  • Avoid damaging the developing roots

  • Maintain good airflow

Healthy plants gradually develop long, sword-shaped foliage followed by flower spikes.

6. Feeding

Gladiolus benefits from fertile soil and moderate feeding.

Organic matter such as vermicompost may be incorporated before planting.

Additional light feeding can be provided during active growth depending on soil fertility and plant condition.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, as this may encourage foliage growth at the expense of flowering.

7. Supporting the Flower Spikes

Mature Gladiolus may develop tall flower stems.

In windy or exposed locations, support may be provided using:

  • Bamboo sticks

  • Garden stakes

  • Plant supports

Tie stems loosely to prevent damage.

Growing Gladiolus in Pots & Grow Bags

Gladiolus can also be grown successfully in containers.

For container growing:

  • Use a deep container

  • Ensure good drainage

  • Use fertile potting media

  • Place in full sun

  • Avoid overcrowding

Recommended Grow Bag

GREEN GARDENS G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 Inch, 6 Gallon

Maintain approximately 3–4 inches spacing between bulbs where possible.

For a Pack of 20, multiple containers or a larger garden bed will normally provide a better display than overcrowding all bulbs into one G-12 grow bag.

Flowering

Gladiolus develops tall flower spikes after sufficient vegetative growth.

Flowers generally begin opening from the lower part of the spike and progress upward.

Flowering time can vary according to:

  • Planting date

  • Temperature

  • Sunlight

  • Soil quality

  • Watering

  • Nutrition

  • Local growing conditions

Excellent for Cut Flowers

Gladiolus is an excellent flower for:

  • Bouquets

  • Fresh flower arrangements

  • Vase displays

  • Home decoration

  • Cut-flower gardens

For cutting, harvest a flower spike when the lowest one or two blooms begin opening or clearly show colour, while several upper buds remain closed.

These upper buds can continue opening after the stem is placed in water.

Vase Care

For better vase life:

  • Use a clean vase

  • Add fresh clean water

  • Change the water regularly

  • Remove leaves submerged in water

  • Keep the arrangement away from excessive heat

After Flowering Care

Once flowering is complete, the spent flower stalk can be removed.

However, do not remove healthy green leaves immediately.

Allow the foliage to remain until it naturally:

  • Turns yellow

  • Dries

  • Dies back

The leaves continue supplying energy to the underground corm.

Bulb Care After the Season

Once foliage has completely dried, bulbs may be lifted if required.

If lifting:

  1. Carefully remove the bulbs from the soil.

  2. Remove loose soil.

  3. Allow the bulbs to dry in a shaded, well-ventilated location.

  4. Remove completely dried foliage.

  5. Store in a cool and dry place.

  6. Protect from excessive moisture.

Do not store wet bulbs in airtight plastic.
