Suitable for growing one young Cup and Saucer Vine with a strong trellis or climbing support.
For longer-term growth, a larger grow bag is recommended because Cobaea scandens develops into a vigorous, heavy vine with an extensive root system.
A larger F-Series grow bag is preferable where sufficient space is available.
Use:
60% Bhalu Mitti / Sandy Soil + 30% GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost + 10% Cocopeat
The growing medium should be:
Loose, fertile, moisture-retentive but well-draining.
Avoid:
Heavy compact soil
Poor drainage
Continuous waterlogging
Extremely dry growing medium
Cup and Saucer Vine seeds are relatively large and flat.
For improved germination:
Soak seeds in water for approximately 12–24 hours before sowing.
Sow seeds approximately:
1–1.5 cm deep
and place them on their edge rather than completely flat where possible.
Cover lightly with fine growing medium.
Keep the growing medium:
Lightly and consistently moist until germination.
Once seedlings begin active growth, provide a sturdy climbing support immediately.
Seeds generally germinate within:
14–30 days
under suitable warm conditions.
Germination can sometimes be irregular, so allow sufficient time before assuming seeds have failed.
For successful germination:
Use fresh seeds
Pre-soak seeds before sowing
Maintain temperatures around 20–25°C
Keep the growing medium lightly moist
Maintain good drainage
Avoid cold conditions
Maintain approximately:
60–90 cm / 24–36 inches between plants
when planting in the ground.
Cup and Saucer Vine develops into a large climber, so sufficient spacing provides better airflow and room for vigorous vine development.
Provide:
Full sun to partial sun
For vigorous growth and good flowering:
5–6+ hours of direct sunlight daily
is recommended where possible.
In Lahore's extreme midsummer heat, protection from intense late-afternoon sunlight can be beneficial.
Water regularly while young vines are establishing.
During active summer growth:
Maintain consistent moisture without keeping the soil continuously saturated.
Water when the upper soil layer begins to dry.
Large mature vines may require more frequent watering during hot and dry weather.
Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Cup and Saucer Vine is a large and vigorous climbing plant.
Provide a:
Strong trellis, metal frame, fence, pergola, arch or sturdy netting
from an early stage.
The plant climbs using branched tendrils and can quickly cover a large vertical area once established.
Avoid weak or temporary support structures because mature vines can become heavy.
At planting time, mix:
into the growing medium.
During vigorous growth, occasional balanced feeding can support healthy foliage and flowering.
Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, as overly rich nitrogen feeding may encourage excessive vegetative growth at the expense of flowers.
