Brussels Sprouts are a distinctive member of the cabbage family grown for the small rounded sprouts that develop along the main stem.
The plant forms a tall upright stalk with broad green leaves. As it matures, compact sprouts begin forming in the leaf axils from the lower part of the stem upward.
This crop is best suited to gardeners who can provide a long, cool growing season and sufficient space for mature plants.
Brussels Sprouts can be:
For the best texture, harvest sprouts while they are firm and compact.
G-11 Grow Bag – 11 × 10 inch
Suitable mainly for a young or compact plant with careful feeding and watering.
G-12 Grow Bag – 12 × 12 inch
A better option for one plant with additional root space.
G-24 Grow Bag – 24 × 12 inch
Recommended for stronger mature growth and for growing more than one plant with proper spacing.
Brussels Sprouts develop into relatively large plants, so avoid overcrowding.
Use:
50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil)
Mix thoroughly before sowing or transplanting.
The growing medium should be:
Brussels Sprouts appreciate regular moisture but should not remain permanently waterlogged.
1. Prepare the Growing Medium
Mix 50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti thoroughly and prepare a fine, loose seed-starting surface.
2. Sow the Seeds
Sow approximately:
0.5–1 cm deep
Cover lightly with fine soil.
3. Water Gently
Use a fine mist or gentle shower.
Keep the growing medium consistently moist during germination.
4. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within:
7–12 days
under suitable conditions.
5. Light Requirements
Provide approximately 5–6+ hours of sunlight daily.
Cool, bright conditions support sturdy seedling growth.
6. Thin the Seedlings
Remove weak or overcrowded seedlings once several true leaves develop.
7. Transplanting
Transplant when seedlings are strong and have approximately:
4–6 true leaves
Suitable final locations include garden beds, raised beds and large grow bags.
8. Plant Spacing
Maintain approximately:
45–60 cm between plants
because mature Brussels Sprouts need substantial space.
9. Watering
Maintain regular and even soil moisture.
Avoid prolonged dryness, especially during active stem and sprout development.
10. Feeding
The recommended growing medium already contains Vermicompost.
Additional GREEN GARDENS Vermicompost may be applied lightly around established plants when required.
Avoid placing fertilizer directly against the stem.
11. General Care
Keep the growing area weed-free and maintain good airflow.
Remove damaged or yellow lower leaves when necessary.
12. Plant Support
Tall plants may benefit from a bamboo stake in windy locations, especially once the main stem becomes heavy with developing sprouts.
13. Sprout Development
Sprouts normally begin forming from the lower stem upward.
Allow them to become firm and compact before harvesting.
14. Harvesting
Harvest the lower sprouts first once they are:
Continue harvesting upward along the stalk as additional sprouts mature.
