Red Amaranthus (لال چو لائی) is a fast-growing and highly nutritious leafy vegetable commonly grown in home gardens and small farms. It features soft, tender red leaves that have a delicious earthy flavor and are packed with iron, calcium, protein, and vitamins A & C. The plant thrives in warm climates, grows quickly, and can be harvested multiple times, making it a perfect crop for continuous fresh greens throughout the season.
Main Sowing Season:
February – September
Suitable for sowing during warm weather when there is no frost.
In warmer regions, it can also be sown in October – November.
Use loose, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic manure.
Level and lightly loosen the soil before sowing.
Scatter seeds evenly on moist soil.
Cover with a thin layer of soil (about 0.5 cm).
Water gently to avoid displacing seeds.
Seeds germinate in 5–12 days, depending on temperature.
Requires full sunlight (6–8 hours daily) for best growth and rich leaf color.
Water regularly to keep the soil lightly moist.
Avoid excessive standing water or waterlogging.
When seedlings reach 2–3 inches, thin them to 6–12 inches apart.
This ensures strong, healthy leaf development.
Apply compost or organic liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks for vigorous growth.
Keep the growing area weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients.
Generally trouble-free, but may occasionally face:
Aphids
Leaf miners
Neem spray or organic pest control can be used if needed.
First harvest in 25–35 days.
Cut young leaves and allow the plant to regrow.
Frequent picking encourages fresh growth and higher yield.
