Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a popular aromatic culinary herb valued for its small fragrant leaves, compact growth and versatility in the kitchen garden. Once established, the plant develops numerous fine woody stems covered with tiny green leaves and can be harvested regularly for fresh culinary use.
Thyme is particularly suitable for pots, containers, grow bags, raised beds and home herb gardens. Its relatively compact growth makes it a useful choice where gardening space is limited.
The leaves can be harvested fresh as required or dried for later culinary use. Regular light harvesting and trimming can also encourage a fuller, bushier plant.
For gardeners in the plains of Pakistan, the preferred sowing period is October to December, when temperatures are more favourable for seed germination and early plant development.

Compact growth habit
Can be grown in kitchen and rooftop gardens

Seeds suitable for home gardeners in Pakistan
Germination typically takes 14–21 days
Suitable germination temperature: 15°C–28°C
In the plains of Pakistan, sow thyme seeds from:
October to December
Cool to mild weather helps establish young thyme plants successfully.
For good germination, maintain approximately:
15°C to 28°C
Use a light, loose and well-draining growing medium.
A suitable seed-starting mixture may contain:
Cocopeat or fine peat-based medium
Fine compost or vermicompost
Perlite, sand or another drainage-enhancing material
Avoid heavy, compact soil that remains waterlogged.
Thyme seeds are small.
Fill a seed tray, small pot or container with moist growing medium.
Scatter the seeds thinly over the surface.
Press them gently into the growing medium.
Cover only with a very thin layer of fine growing medium.
Water gently using a fine spray.
Do not bury the seeds deeply.
Keep the growing medium lightly moist, especially during germination.
Avoid:
Heavy watering
Constantly saturated soil
Standing water
A fine mist or gentle watering is preferable while seedlings are small.
Under suitable conditions, seeds normally germinate within:
14–21 days
Temperature, moisture, seed depth and growing conditions can influence germination time.
Once seedlings emerge, place them in a bright location.
Gradually introduce young plants to stronger sunlight as they become established.
Mature thyme generally performs best with plenty of sunlight and good air circulation.
Transplant seedlings when they are strong enough to handle and have developed several true leaves.
Keep adequate spacing between plants to encourage:
Healthy branching
Better airflow
Fuller growth
Thyme grows well in pots and grow bags provided drainage is excellent.
Always ensure the container has proper drainage and avoid allowing water to remain around the roots.
Once the plant is well established, individual sprigs can be harvested as required.
Light and regular trimming encourages compact, bushy growth. Avoid removing too much of a young plant at one time.
Seed germination is a natural biological process and may vary according to temperature, moisture, soil medium, sowing depth, seed handling and local growing conditions.
