Sweet Marjoram is a highly aromatic culinary herb valued for its soft green leaves and pleasantly mild, sweet flavour.
Known botanically as Origanum majorana, it belongs to the mint family, Lamiaceae, and is closely related to oregano. Sweet marjoram is generally milder and sweeter in flavour than common oregano, making it especially useful in everyday cooking.
The plant develops into a compact, bushy herb with many branching stems and small fragrant leaves. It is well suited to home kitchen gardens, pots, grow bags, raised beds, balconies and rooftop gardens.

For the plains of Pakistan, including Lahore and similar warm-climate areas, the recommended sowing period is:
October, November and December
Sweet marjoram performs best when temperatures are mild and excessive summer heat has passed.
15°C to 28°C
This temperature range supports better seed germination and healthy early growth.
20–30 days
Germination may vary depending on soil temperature, moisture, seed freshness and sowing depth.
For home gardening, the following GREEN GARDENS grow bag sizes are suitable:
G-8 is suitable for a smaller herb plant, while G-11 and G-12 provide more root space and are better choices for a fuller, bushier plant.
For Sweet Marjoram, use:
50% Vermicompost
50% Bhalu Mitti / Sandy Soil
Mix both components thoroughly before filling the pot or grow bag.
This mix helps provide:
Good drainage
Loose root-zone conditions
Organic nutrition
Better moisture balance
Healthy root development
Avoid heavy, compacted soil and prolonged waterlogging.
Choose a place receiving approximately 5–7 hours of sunlight daily.
Sweet marjoram can be grown in:
Pots
Raised beds
Kitchen gardens
Terrace gardens
Rooftop gardens
Full sun is preferred, although light afternoon shade can be beneficial during warmer weather.
Prepare a loose, well-drained growing medium using:
50% Vermicompost + 50% Bhalu Mitti / Sandy Soil
Mix thoroughly before sowing.
The growing medium should drain freely while still retaining enough moisture for germination.
Marjoram seeds are small, so sow them carefully.
Scatter the seeds lightly over the soil surface or sow them in shallow rows.
Do not bury them deeply.
Sow approximately:
0.3–0.5 cm deep
Cover with only a very thin layer of fine soil.
Deep sowing may reduce germination.
After sowing, use a fine spray or gentle watering method.
Keep the upper soil surface consistently moist during germination.
Avoid:
Heavy watering
Flooding
Waterlogging
Letting the surface become completely dry
Expected germination:
20–30 days
Recommended temperature:
15°C–28°C
Be patient, as marjoram can germinate slowly compared with many common vegetable seeds.
Once seedlings are established and have developed several true leaves, thin overcrowded plants.
For container growing, retain the strongest seedlings and allow enough space for the plant to develop into a bushy herb.
Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry.
Sweet marjoram prefers moderate watering and does not perform well in continuously wet soil.
Good drainage is particularly important.
The recommended potting mix already contains Vermicompost, so avoid excessive fertilizer during early growth.
If additional feeding is needed later, use a mild and balanced fertilizer at a conservative dose. Recommended Organic Fertilizer is Veggie Mix. Add 3-4 Tbs in 12" pot/ Grow Bag. Repeat after 20 - 30 days during active growing season.
Avoid excessive nitrogen because it can produce soft, overly lush growth.
When the plant becomes established, lightly pinch the growing tips.
This encourages:
More branching
Bushier growth
More leaves for harvesting
Harvest young shoots and leaves as required.
Regular light harvesting can help maintain compact growth.
If growing mainly for leaves, harvest regularly before heavy flowering begins.
If flowers are allowed to develop, they may attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.
