Society Garlic (Tulbaghia violacea), commonly known as Garlic Lily, is a hardy and ornamental flowering plant admired for its fragrant star-shaped lavender-pink blooms and slender grassy leaves. The plant emits a mild garlic aroma and is often used in borders, pathways, rock gardens, and container displays.
This easy-to-grow perennial blooms repeatedly from late spring to autumn, requires minimal care, and thrives even in hot, dry climates. Society Garlic is also pest-resistant and adds long-lasting beauty to any home garden.
Best Planting Time:
Spring (February – April)

Soil:

Planting Depth:
Plant bulbs 1–2 inches deep with the pointed side up.
Spacing:
Leave 6–8 inches between bulbs to allow proper spread.
Watering After Planting:
Water once thoroughly to help bulbs settle.
Prefers full sun but can also grow in partial shade.
More sunlight encourages stronger and more frequent blooming.
Water regularly but allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Avoid waterlogging to prevent bulb rot.
Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost every 4–6 weeks during the growing season for healthy growth and better flowering.
Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
Cut back dead leaves once they dry.
Mulch in winter if temperatures are extremely cold.
