Carrot Red is a popular winter vegetable seed variety for home gardening, kitchen gardening, rooftop gardens, and container growing in Pakistan. It produces attractive red-colored carrots with fresh green tops and a classic long carrot shape when grown in soft, loose, and well-draining soil.
Carrot Red is suitable for direct sowing in garden beds, raised beds, and grow bags. For best root development, use deep, stone-free soil with good organic matter. This variety is ideal for gardeners who want to grow fresh seasonal carrots at home during the cool months.
Sowing Season in Pakistan: September to November
Best for: Home garden, kitchen garden, raised beds, rooftop gardening, grow bags
Growing Method: Direct sowing from seeds
Use rich, soft, and well-draining soil. Carrots need loose soil so the roots can grow straight and smooth. Remove stones, hard lumps, old roots, and debris before sowing.
A good soil mix is:
50% sandy/garden soil + 50% vermicompost or well-rotted organic matter
Avoid heavy clay soil because it can cause twisted, short, or deformed carrots.
Carrot Red can be grown in garden beds, raised beds, and grow bags. Use a container with good depth and drainage holes. A 12×12 inch grow bag can be used for home growing, but wider grow bags or beds give better spacing and root development.
Sow seeds directly in the final growing place. Carrots do not like transplanting.
Make shallow lines in the soil and sow seeds lightly.
Seed depth: 0.5 cm to 1 cm
Row distance: 6–8 inches
Plant distance after thinning: 2–3 inches
Cover seeds with a very thin layer of soft soil and water gently.
Keep the soil evenly moist until germination. Do not let the top layer dry completely.
After germination, water regularly but avoid overwatering. Soil should remain moist, not soggy. Uneven watering may affect root shape and quality.
Carrots grow best in good winter sunlight.
Provide 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for healthy growth.
Carrot seeds usually take 7–14 days to germinate, depending on temperature, soil moisture, and seed quality.
Keep the seed bed moist during this period.
When seedlings are 2–3 inches tall, thin extra plants carefully. Keep only healthy seedlings with proper spacing.
Do not overcrowd the plants, because crowded carrots may remain thin or small.
Use compost or vermicompost in the soil before sowing. During growth, apply a mild organic fertilizer or vegetable fertilizer in small quantity after 20–25 days if needed.
Avoid too much nitrogen fertilizer, because it may increase leaf growth and reduce proper root development.
Keep the soil loose and weed-free. Do not disturb the roots while removing weeds. If carrot shoulders appear above the soil, cover them lightly with soil.
Carrots are usually ready when roots reach a good usable size. Gently loosen the soil before pulling to avoid breaking the roots.
Harvest time depends on weather, soil, and growing conditions, but carrots commonly take around 80–100 days after sowing.
Note: Growth, size, color, and harvest time may vary depending on climate, soil quality, sunlight, watering, and care.
