Grow crisp, colourful, and refreshing Red & White Long Radish at home from seeds. This attractive variety develops elongated roots with a bright red upper portion and a smooth white tip. It is suitable for kitchen gardens, raised beds, grow bags, and deep containers.
The roots are best harvested while young and tender for a crisp texture and pleasantly mild, peppery flavour. They can be enjoyed fresh in salads, sandwiches, raita, pickles, garnishes, and traditional dishes. The edible green leaves may also be used in cooked recipes.
Attractive red-and-white elongated roots
Crisp texture with a fresh, mildly peppery taste
Suitable for pots, grow bags, raised beds, and garden soil
Fast-growing vegetable for home gardening
Roots and young leaves are both edible
Suitable for warm and cold climatic regions when sown in the correct season
Hot-climate areas: September to November
Cold-climate areas: April to July
For best root development, grow radish during mild weather and avoid periods of extreme heat.
Prepare soft, loose, and well-draining soil so the roots can grow straight without obstruction.
A suitable mixture is:
50% garden or sandy soil
40% well-decomposed compost or vermicompost
10% cocopeat or river sand, where required
Remove stones, hard soil lumps, and undecomposed material before sowing. Avoid using excessive fresh manure or high-nitrogen fertilizer, as this may encourage leafy growth instead of good root formation.
Radish should be sown directly in its final growing place because transplanting may disturb the roots.
Sow seeds approximately 1 cm deep
Maintain about 5–8 cm spacing between plants
Keep rows approximately 15–20 cm apart
Sow 1–2 seeds at each point
After germination, retain the healthiest seedling
For a continuous harvest, sow a small batch every 10–15 days during the suitable season.
Use a container with drainage holes and sufficient depth.
Suitable options include:
Minimum container depth: 8–10 inches
12-inch pots
12 × 12-inch grow bags
24 × 12-inch or larger rectangular grow bags
Raised beds and open garden soil
Avoid overcrowding, as close spacing can produce thin, misshapen, or poorly developed roots.
Water gently immediately after sowing and keep the soil evenly moist until germination.
After germination:
Water whenever the upper soil begins to dry
Maintain consistent moisture
Avoid prolonged dryness followed by heavy watering
Do not allow waterlogging
Irregular watering may cause roots to become hard, overly pungent, cracked, or misshapen.
Provide approximately 5–7 hours of direct sunlight daily.
In warmer areas, morning sunlight with some protection from intense afternoon heat may help maintain better root quality.
Seeds generally germinate within 3–8 days, depending on temperature, moisture, and soil conditions.
Once seedlings are established, thin out weak or crowded plants carefully to maintain proper spacing.
If the soil contains sufficient compost or vermicompost, heavy feeding is usually unnecessary.
During growth, a small amount of balanced organic fertilizer may be applied away from the stem. Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich fertilizer, as it can produce large leaves with underdeveloped roots.
Radishes are generally ready when the upper portion of the root becomes clearly visible and reaches a suitable size. Harvest while the roots are young, firm, and tender.
Do not leave mature roots in the soil for too long, as they may become:
Tough
Hollow
Fibrous
Overly spicy
Less juicy
Loosen the surrounding soil and pull gently from the base of the leaves.
Always sow radish directly in its final container or bed.
Use soft, stone-free soil for straight and smooth roots.
Thin seedlings early to prevent overcrowding.
Maintain regular moisture throughout growth.
Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer.
Harvest on time for the best texture and flavour.
Rotate crops and avoid repeatedly growing radish in the same soil without refreshing it.
