Society Garlic (Tulbaghia violacea), also known as Garlic Lily, is a hardy perennial with attractive lavender-pink star-shaped flowers and slender grass-like foliage. Ideal for pots, grow bags, borders, pathways and garden beds.
Its foliage has a distinctive garlic-like aroma, and the plant has traditionally been used around gardens as an aromatic deterrent, although it should not be relied upon as guaranteed snake or rodent control.

This attractive clump-forming perennial produces slender, grass-like foliage with upright flowering stems carrying clusters of delicate lavender-pink, star-shaped flowers. Once established, it forms an attractive mound and can flower repeatedly through the warmer months.
Society Garlic is especially useful for garden borders, pathways, rock gardens, edging, landscaped beds, pots and grow bags. Several plants grown together can create an impressive flowering border.
The foliage has a distinctive garlic-like fragrance, particularly when touched or crushed.
Society Garlic has traditionally been planted around homes and gardens because of its strong garlic-like aroma.
Traditional use includes planting it as an aromatic barrier associated with discouraging unwanted garden visitors, including snakes. Some gardeners also report reduced rodent activity around strongly aromatic plantings.
However, this should be considered a traditional and observational garden benefit rather than guaranteed snake or rat control. Society Garlic should not be relied upon as the only protective measure where snakes or rodents are a serious concern.
For Lahore and other warm regions of Pakistan, the recommended planting periods are:
Spring: February – April
Autumn: September – November
For hot plains, September to November and February to March are particularly suitable because the bulbs can establish before extreme summer temperatures.
Use loose, fertile and well-draining soil enriched with compost, vermicompost or other mature organic matter.
Plant the bulbs approximately 1–2 inches deep, keeping the growing point or pointed side upward.
Maintain approximately 6–8 inches spacing between bulbs so that the plants have enough room to develop into healthy clumps.
After planting, water thoroughly once to settle the growing medium around the bulbs.
Society Garlic performs best in full sun, although it can also tolerate partial shade.
For stronger plants and better flowering, provide approximately 5–7 hours or more of direct sunlight where possible.
Plants grown in too much shade may produce more foliage and fewer flowers.
Water thoroughly after planting.
During establishment, keep the soil moderately moist but never continuously wet.
Once established, allow the upper layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Avoid waterlogging, as permanently wet soil can damage the underground bulbs and roots.
Mix compost or vermicompost into the soil before planting.
During active growth and flowering, apply a light feeding approximately every 4–6 weeks using:
Vermicompost, mature compost or a suitable balanced fertilizer.
Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer because overly rich feeding can encourage excessive leaf growth with comparatively less flowering.
Society Garlic grows very well in pots and grow bags.

Do not overcrowd all 10 bulbs into a single G-12 grow bag. Plant a reasonable number according to spacing and use additional containers or garden space for the remaining bulbs.
Remove faded flower stems periodically to keep the plant neat and encourage continued flowering.
Remove completely dry or damaged foliage when required.
Healthy green leaves should be retained because they help support the underground bulbs and future growth.
As mature clumps become larger over time, they can eventually be divided and replanted.
Society Garlic is generally a hardy and relatively trouble-free garden plant.
Good drainage is particularly important because excessively wet soil can encourage root or bulb problems.
Occasional aphids or other soft-bodied pests may appear. These can be managed using appropriate organic garden pest-control methods such as neem-based sprays.

Under suitable conditions, established plants may produce repeated flushes of flowers during the growing season.
Actual flowering depends on bulb maturity, planting time, sunlight, temperature, nutrition, watering and local growing conditions.
Society Garlic is a long-lived perennial.
Once properly established, the plant can remain in the garden for many years and gradually develop into larger flowering clumps.
