Red Onion (لال پیاز) is a popular and essential kitchen vegetable known for its deep red color, strong aroma, and sweet-spicy flavor. This variety produces firm, round bulbs with glossy red skin and excellent storage quality.
Rich in antioxidants, vitamins B & C, and beneficial compounds, red onions are perfect for salads, curries, and chutneys. They are easy to grow and thrive well in Pakistan’s climate.
1. Soil:
Loose, fertile, and well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Ideal pH: 6.0–7.0.
2. Sowing Time (Pakistan):
Best time for sowing is October to December.
3. Sowing Method:
Start seeds in a nursery bed.
Transplant seedlings after 5–6 weeks when they reach 5–6 inches tall.
Space plants 4–5 inches apart in rows 12–15 inches apart.
4. Watering:
Keep soil moist during bulb formation, but avoid overwatering. Reduce watering near harvest time to prevent rotting.
5. Sunlight:
Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily).
6. Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 7–12 days under ideal conditions.
7. Harvesting:
Ready for harvest in 100–120 days after transplanting.
Harvest when the tops turn yellow and fall over.
Dry bulbs in shade before storing.
