Lemon Balm is a must-have for any herb garden, offering a delightful citrus scent and a lush, green presence. A member of the mint family, this perennial is famous for its heart-shaped, crinkled leaves that release a refreshing lemon aroma whenever brushed against. It is incredibly versatile—perfect for brewing calming herbal teas, garnishing summer drinks, or even using as a natural mosquito repellent.
At Green Gardens, we provide high-quality seeds that yield bushy, vigorous plants, making them ideal for both garden beds and patio containers.
To get the most out of your Lemon Balm, follow these seasonal guidelines and care tips:
Growing Seasons:
Autumn/Winter: October to December
Spring: February to April
Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In the hotter months of Lahore or similar climates, some afternoon shade will keep the leaves from scorching.
Sowing: Sow seeds on the surface of the soil. Do not cover them deeply, as Lemon Balm seeds need light to germinate. Press them gently into the moist soil.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period (usually 10–14 days). Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant but prefers regular watering.
Soil: Prefers rich, well-draining soil. Adding a bit of organic compost before planting will encourage faster growth.
Spacing: If planting in the ground, space plants about 12–15 inches apart to allow for their bushy habit.
Harvesting: Pick leaves as needed once the plant is at least 6 inches tall. Frequent harvesting prevents the plant from becoming "leggy" and encourages a fuller, more compact shape.
Pro Tip: To keep your Lemon Balm tasting its best, pinch off any flower buds that appear. This directs the plant's energy back into the flavorful leaves rather than seed production.
