Leek or Green Onion (ہرا پیاز) is a mild, flavorful member of the onion family, grown for its long, tender stalks and hollow green leaves. It adds a fresh aroma and gentle onion flavor to salads, soups, omelets, and stir-fries.
This easy-to-grow, fast-maturing variety performs well in Pakistan’s cooler months and is perfect for kitchen gardens or small farms. Leeks are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, and promote digestion and heart health.
1. Soil:
Loose, fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Ideal pH: 6.0–7.0.
2. Sowing Time (Pakistan):
Best grown from September to February during the cool season.
3. Sowing Method:
Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in seed trays or directly in beds.
Transplant seedlings when they reach 4–5 inches tall.
Keep 6–8 inches between plants and 12 inches between rows.
4. Watering:
Keep soil evenly moist; avoid standing water.
5. Sunlight:
Prefers full sun to partial shade.
6. Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 7–10 days.
7. Harvesting:
Green onions: Ready to harvest in 45–60 days.
Leeks: Mature in 90–120 days, when stems are thick and white.
