Hyacinth Beans (Lablab) is a vigorous, fast-growing climbing vine valued for its lush green foliage, attractive purple to lavender flowers, and distinctive green pods. Its dense growth makes it an excellent choice for covering trellises, fences, arches, balconies, and garden walls.
The plant develops long trailing vines and requires strong support for healthy upward growth. Once established, it produces clusters of pea-like flowers followed by decorative pods, creating an attractive combination of foliage, flowers, and fruit.
Hyacinth Beans grow well in warm conditions and are suitable for home gardens, rooftop gardens, raised beds, and large grow bags. With adequate sunlight, fertile soil, regular watering, and a sturdy trellis, the plant can provide vigorous growth throughout its growing season.
Growing Instructions
1. Sowing Season in Pakistan
The recommended sowing periods are:
- February to April
- September to November
Avoid sowing during extreme heat, frost, or prolonged cold weather.
2. Soil Preparation
Use loose, fertile, and well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.
Recommended soil mixture:
- 50% Bhalu mitti or good-quality garden soil
- 40% vermicompost or well-decomposed compost
- 10% cocopeat or river sand for improved drainage
Avoid compact or waterlogged soil.
3. Seed Preparation
Soak the seeds in clean water for approximately 8–12 hours before sowing. This may help soften the seed coat and support quicker germination.
4. Sowing Method
- Sow seeds directly in the final container or garden bed.
- Sow each seed approximately 1–1.5 inches deep.
- Place 2 seeds per planting spot.
- Maintain a spacing of approximately 12–18 inches between plants.
- After germination, retain the healthier seedling where necessary.
5. Germination
Seeds generally germinate within 7–14 days, depending on temperature, moisture, and seed-growing conditions.
Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, but do not allow it to become soggy.
6. Container and Grow Bag
Use a minimum 12×12-inch grow bag for one plant. A larger container can support stronger root development and more vigorous vine growth.
Ensure that the container has proper drainage holes.
7. Support and Trellis
Hyacinth Beans is a climbing vine and requires support from an early stage.
Suitable supports include:
- Bamboo trellis
- Garden netting
- Fence
- Metal frame
- Vertical strings
- Garden arch
Guide young vines gently towards the support as they begin growing.
8. Sunlight
Place the plant where it receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Insufficient sunlight may result in weak growth and reduced flowering.
9. Watering
Water deeply whenever the upper layer of soil starts to dry.
- Keep the soil evenly moist during germination.
- Avoid excessive watering and standing water.
- Increase watering frequency during hot, dry weather.
- Water near the soil rather than repeatedly wetting the foliage.
10. Fertilizer
Mix vermicompost or well-decomposed compost into the soil before sowing.
After establishment:
- Add a small quantity of vermicompost every 20–30 days.
- Use a balanced fertilizer in moderate quantities when required.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it may encourage leaves at the expense of flowers and pods.
11. Care and Maintenance
- Remove weak, damaged, or diseased leaves.
- Keep the growing area clean and well ventilated.
- Secure long vines to the trellis where necessary.
- Check regularly for aphids, whiteflies, mites, and leaf-eating insects.
- Avoid overcrowding the plant.
12. Flowering and Pod Development
Flowering usually begins once the vine becomes well established. Pods develop after successful flowering and pollination.
Regular observation and timely harvesting can encourage continued pod production during favourable weather.
