Grow fresh and aromatic Greek Oregano at home from seeds. Greek Oregano is a popular perennial herb known for its rich fragrance, compact growth and flavourful leaves. It is commonly used in Mediterranean-style cooking, sauces, salads, soups, pizza, pasta and seasoning blends.
The plant develops into a dense, bushy herb with small green leaves and performs well in pots, grow bags, raised beds and kitchen gardens. Once established, regular trimming encourages fresh new growth and helps maintain a compact shape.
Greek Oregano prefers well-drained soil, good sunlight and moderate watering. It is a suitable choice for gardeners who want a useful culinary herb that can be harvested repeatedly during the growing season.
Sowing Season in Pakistan:
February to March and October to November
Sow the seeds in seedling trays, small pots or directly in a prepared garden bed. As oregano seeds are very small, place them on the soil surface and cover them with only a very thin layer of fine soil or compost.
Approximately 2–3 mm deep. Avoid burying the seeds too deeply.
Use a light and well-drained growing medium. A suitable mixture is:
50% fine garden soil
30% compost or vermicompost
20% cocopeat or river sand
The soil should remain loose and should not become waterlogged.
Water gently with a fine spray after sowing. Keep the soil slightly moist during germination, but do not overwater. Once the plants are established, allow the upper soil layer to dry slightly before watering again.
Seeds usually germinate in approximately 7–21 days, depending on temperature, soil moisture and growing conditions.
Place the plants where they receive around 5–7 hours of sunlight daily. Morning sunlight is especially suitable in warmer areas.
When seedlings develop several true leaves and become strong enough to handle, transplant them carefully into pots, grow bags or garden beds.
Keep approximately 20–30 cm distance between plants to allow healthy spreading and airflow.
Greek Oregano grows well in pots and grow bags with proper drainage holes. Avoid using an excessively large container for a single young plant. More than one plant may be grown in a wider container with suitable spacing.
Mix compost or vermicompost into the soil before planting. During active growth, apply a small amount of compost or a mild balanced fertilizer occasionally. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it may produce soft growth with reduced aroma.
Begin light harvesting once the plant becomes well established. Cut healthy upper stems with clean scissors, leaving enough growth on the plant for recovery. Regular trimming encourages branching and bushier growth.
Avoid waterlogging and keep the plant in an airy location. Remove weak or damaged growth and trim regularly to prevent the plant from becoming leggy.
