Common Mallow (Malva sylvestris) is an attractive flowering plant producing beautiful pink to purple blooms with prominent dark veins radiating from the centre of each flower.
Its natural, cottage-garden appearance makes it an excellent choice for flower beds, borders, pollinator-friendly gardens and large containers. Once established, the plant develops branching stems carrying numerous flowers over an extended flowering period under suitable growing conditions.
Common Mallow prefers good sunlight, fertile well-drained soil and regular but moderate watering. It is comparatively easy to raise from seed and can be grown during both the spring and cool-season planting windows in the plains of Pakistan.
Best Sowing Months:
February, March, October & November
Growing Season: WINTER/SUMMER
Sowing Method: Direct sowing or seedling trays
Sowing Depth: About 0.5–1 cm
Growing Medium: Use a light, fertile and well-draining seed-starting mixture.
How to Sow: Sow the seeds individually and cover them lightly with fine growing medium. Water gently so that the seeds are not displaced.
Moisture: Keep the growing medium slightly moist during germination. Avoid continuously waterlogged soil.
Light: After germination, gradually provide the seedlings with good sunlight. Established plants perform best in a sunny position.
Transplanting: If started in trays, transplant healthy seedlings once they are strong enough to handle and have developed several true leaves.
Plant Spacing: Approximately 30–45 cm between plants is suitable where adequate space is available.
Watering: Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry. Avoid excessive watering.
Soil: Fertile, loose and well-drained garden soil enriched with well-decomposed compost is suitable.
Flowering: Flowering time varies according to sowing season, temperature, sunlight and general growing conditions.
For the plains and warmer regions of Pakistan:
Spring/Summer Crop: February–March
Winter/Cool-Season Crop: October–November
Local weather and temperature can cause some variation in the ideal sowing window.
