Botanical name: Clitoria ternatea

Plant type: Flowering climber
Growing habit: Vigorous climbing vine
Suitable for pots, grow bags and garden beds
Ideal for trellises, fences, arches and balcony railings
Suitable for home gardening in warm climates
The recommended sowing periods are:
February to April
September to November
For better germination, sow when the temperature remains approximately 20°C to 30°C.
Soak the seeds in normal water for approximately 8 to 12 hours before sowing. This helps soften the seed coat and may support faster germination.
Use a soft, fertile and well-draining soil mixture. A suitable mix may include:
50% garden or sandy soil
40% vermicompost or mature organic compost
10% cocopeat during warm weather
Avoid heavy, compacted or continuously wet soil.
Sow each seed approximately ½ to 1 inch deep.
Place one or two seeds in each small pot or seedling section.
Cover lightly with soil.
Water gently after sowing.
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
Seeds commonly germinate within approximately 7 to 21 days, depending on temperature, moisture and seed condition.
Place the container in a warm and bright location. Protect newly sown seeds from harsh afternoon sunlight and heavy rainfall.
When seedlings develop approximately 3 to 4 true leaves, carefully shift them into a larger pot, grow bag or garden bed.
For container growing, use at least a:
12-inch pot, or
12 × 12-inch grow bag
Larger containers will allow stronger root and vine development.
Provide approximately 5 to 7 hours of direct sunlight daily. Adequate sunlight supports healthy growth and flowering.
Install a trellis, bamboo frame, wire support or garden net early. Gently guide the young vine towards the support as it grows.
Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry.
Keep young seedlings lightly moist.
Avoid daily heavy watering.
Ensure excess water drains freely from the container.
Add vermicompost or well-decomposed compost every 3 to 4 weeks in moderate quantity. A balanced flowering-plant fertilizer may also be used according to its label instructions.
Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it may encourage leafy growth with fewer flowers.
Pinch the growing tip when the plant becomes established to encourage branching.
Remove dry, weak or damaged growth.
Regularly guide new shoots onto the trellis.
Check occasionally for aphids, mites, caterpillars and other common garden pests.
Germination and plant performance depend on temperature, soil quality, moisture, sunlight and correct sowing practices. Natural variation in growth and flowering may occur.
