Artichokes are a magnificent addition to any garden, offering both architectural beauty and gourmet rewards. Known for their striking silvery-green, serrated foliage, these plants produce large, edible flower buds that feature a tender, flavorful heart. Growing your own artichokes allows you to harvest them at their peak freshness, far surpassing the quality found in stores.
To ensure a successful harvest for your garden or to share with your "Gardening with Javed Iqbal" community, follow these specific steps:
Sowing Seasons: The ideal times for sowing are from February to April and again in October and November.
Seed Preparation: Before sowing, soak the seeds in water for 3–4 hours to soften the seed coat and encourage faster germination.
Soil Requirements: For the best results, use a well-draining potting mix consisting of:
50% Vermicompost (for rich nutrients).
50% Bhalu Mitti (Sandy Soil) to ensure excellent drainage and root aeration.
Planting: Sow the seeds approximately 1 inch deep in your prepared soil mix.
Sunlight: Artichokes thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
