Growing Instructions:
Onions can be grown in both hot and cold climate areas of Pakistan. Here are the detailed growing instructions for each climate.
Hot Climate Areas (e.g., Sindh, Southern Punjab, Balochistan)
1. Sowing Season:
– Kharif Season: June to July
– Rabi Season: October to November
Cold Climate Areas (e.g., Northern Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir)
1. Sowing Season:
– Kharif Season: March to April
– Rabi Season: September to October
2. Soil Preparation:
– Choose well-drained sandy loam soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5.
– Prepare the soil by adding 50% Bhall and 50% organic matter like vermicompost.
– Sow on raised beds or in Grow Bags.
3. Sowing Method:
– Direct sowing or seedling transplanting can be used.
– For direct sowing, seeds are sown at a depth of 1-2 cm, maintaining a row-to-row distance of 6-8 inches and plant-to-plant distance of 3-4 inches.
– For transplanting, sow seeds in nursery beds or small pots and transplant seedlings when they are 6-8 weeks old.
4. Transplanting of Seedlings:
– Transplant seedlings in the evening to reduce transplant shock.
– Ensure a spacing of 6-8 inches between rows and 4 inches between plants.
5. Watering:
– Irrigate the field immediately after transplanting.
– Maintain consistent moisture levels; avoid waterlogging.
– Water intervals: every 7-10 days in winter, 5-7 days in summer, as required.
6. Fertilizer:
– Apply NPK or Vermicompost 4 weeks after transplanting.
7. Harvest:
– Onions are ready for harvest when the tops begin to fall over and dry.
– Pull out the onions and let them cure in the field for a few days before storing. it takes around 5-6 months from the date of planting seedlings.

– Monitor for pests like thrips and diseases such as downy mildew and purple blotch.
