Growing Lotus from Seeds
1. Germinating the Seeds
Scarify the Seeds: Lotus seeds have a hard shell. Use a file or sandpaper to gently scarify one end until you see a lighter inner layer.
Soak the Seeds: Place the scarified seeds in a container of warm water. Change the water daily to prevent mold. Seeds that swell within 2-3 days are viable.
2. Preparing for Planting
Once sprouted (about 1-2 weeks), the seeds will develop small roots and leaves.
Prepare a wide, shallow container without drainage holes or use a pond feature.
3. Soil and Planting
Use heavy clay or loamy soil. Avoid potting mixes that float.
Fill the container with 3-4 inches of soil. Press the sprouted seeds gently into the soil, ensuring the leaves are above the surface.
4. Adding Water
Cover the soil with a few inches of water. Gradually increase the water depth as the plant grows, up to 6-12 inches for young plants. Mature lotus can thrive in up to 18 inches of water.
5. Light and Temperature
Lotus plants require full sun (6-8 hours daily) to thrive.
They grow best in temperatures between 20-35°C. Protect young plants from cold weather.
6. Maintenance
Add fertilizers formulated for aquatic plants once the plant establishes. Avoid over-fertilizing.
Remove dead leaves and flowers to maintain water quality.
7. Overwintering
In colder climates, move the container indoors or ensure the tubers stay underwater to prevent freezing.
With care and patience, your lotus plant will bloom in 2-3 months, rewarding you with its breathtaking flowers in red, white, or pink.
